Smaller sails for a GP14

Post by Michael4 »

Looking for a smaller Jib and main for a GP 14 for use when very young people are aboard. Something from an 11 or 12ft dinghy might be good. Certainly don't need to be pristine!

What have you got in your shed/attic/garage?

Steve,

Old Heron sails if you have them might be the answer, we will do the maths.

Where are you?

Thanks, not too far, will let you know.

Presumably they were for a bermudian (bermudan?) rig rather than the early gunter?

I think there is an old gunter rig set and a virtually new set of bermudan rig sails.

Pretty well anything will work for a mainsail. For a jib you'll need something which sheets well(ish) and I think a Heron jib would be extremely low in the clew on a GP14 unless you're happy to put a set of fairleads well forward to sheet it from.
Best wishes

I had thought that if the Heron jib is significantly shorter on the luff then it could be set with a strop at the tack to lift it up some.

Thanks for the help all, we think we have found an old GP14 main to put some reefing points into which may be the best option.
