Firefly Centreboard

Post by highburyal »

Started getting on with restoration of F2451 Spadger. The centreboard casing was well rotten and I have had to remove all wood, including the keel and hog, for most of the length of the casing. Unfortunately the structure fell apart while it was being removed, so I do not have a template to cut the plywood sides for the new casing. Can anyone offer any tips on how I can proceed, is it possible to get a template for the casing or do I have to construct one from the diagram in the class rules?

Cheers, Al

Ask on Firefly forum.

I think Tomato boats sells already-cut case sides.

If not, you can work from plans.....and/or take measurements from boat.

Normally, I would work from the boat and cross-refer to rules and make up some card templates. When I was happy with the fit of the card templates, then I would use those to cut the proper ply pieces.

hope this helps

cheers

Re your remark about the Firefly site - could someone else check if the site is up and running. I can't get anything there at the moment - It says something about PLESK whatever that is. They seem to have been plagued with problems on that site just at the time I needed info from them!!.

I think it looks like they have not renewed their domain name subscription, and therefore their site has been taken down. Al

The firefly "new" forum was plagued from the outset by problems of attack from spoofed memberships aiming to post pornography. I believe it is a weakness in the security of that particular php protocol. I dont really understand it but I think its caused by a worm virus.

As a result very few members could post and they had to disable all the usefull stuff like Pictures etc.

It actually shows up what a good job the maintenance team on this site have done. The Firefly site could really use some help I suspect.

I have gone through my back copies of the firefly bulletin and could send copies by post if youre interested in any of the technical articles. (not that many I'm afraid and nothing better than the technical data already on this site.) PM me if you want a copy or two.

getting rid of the spammers is relatively easy it only needs the annoying wibbly letters to stop the robots from registering and a simple question as a further check to make sure it's a real person registering. You only get problems if you install the forum software out-of-the-box and don't configure it to stop the spammers - it's one of the problems of open source software as any loophole is quickly found and exploited.

I used to manually approve all new members but now with the anti spamming/automatic registration techniques in place the forum looks after itself.

If the Firefly site needs some help with a forum tell them to get in contact as I'm sure we can sort them out.
