Oops, broke the Moth again...
I was just about to launch today when I realized that the windy wednesday from a couple of weeks ago had damaged the shroud area again on my Skol Moth...so I crewed an RS500 instead!
Does leave a bit of a problem for Netley, possibly, if I can't fix it in time. I shall go and fetch her tomorrow evening, and see how bad it is. If it is going to take too long, does anyone have a spare singlehander they would be willing to lend, please?

Oh....year....you could borrow my Firefly as well if you wanted.....just imagined that you wouldn't want to....might be a bit of a let-down after Saskia.

Plenty of Fireflies to choose from, thanks, but on salt water I feel I would rather sail a true singlehander, as if a sea breeze blows up I'd be blown away.
Thank you for your suggestions. I'm not sure learning to sail a canoe n front of you lot would be good for my self confidence! Or a Finn for that matter...
I've got the Moth back and started a repair, so if all goes well, I should be OK. The shroud will be better supported this time than when built, I hope.

From what I remember of 1970s Moths, breaking them every time you sailed was part of the experience, that's why there aren't many around.

Rupert, if the Moth repair proves unsucessful then you would be welcome to borrow my old Solo for the weekend. Unfortunately I do not currently have a car with a towbar so I cant get it back to Newbury, so you would have to collect from Henley SC at Wargrave Nr Reading.

That is a very kind offer, thank you Rich, and if she breaks again this weekend I may well take you up on it.
I completed a repair today which involved a bracing piece a few inches onto the underside of the deck and a fair amount of P40...a pretty traditional Moth repair...
You are quite right, Peter, I have broken something almost 1/2 the times I have been out, but it had been reducing in number as things got fixed. The odd thing is that some of the things that are breaking didn't break in 1971, or whatever. I can only think that 35 mph gusts were avoided till I got hold of her...

When I had a Harrier for a while I couldn't believe some of the things that had apparently survived twenty five years or whatever until I owned the boat... Your Skol was one of the stronger Moths. We used to throw Moths away if we had a structral failure in the hull and put another one together in a couple of weekends, (I owned several Moths when I was a slim light weight student). This was due to the fact that the wooden stich and glue boats were built by torturing 3mm or 2mm ply and then decking nonstamping areas with either 1mm or 0.5mm modelling ply there were very few internal reinforcing bulkheads apart form those to take the mast compression loads and the shroud tension.
Hope you get it fixed in time.

I can remmember a girl's moth in Salcombe - she used to polish the paint off till you could begin to see the grain, to reduce the weight. Then she capsized and fell through the cockpit wall into a bouyancy tank! That boat was _very_ built down to a weight!alan williams wrote:Hi Rupert
