A Living Museum

Post by Ancient Geek »

I have previously said that I view the CVRDA as a living museum, heres a pipe dream that could so easily bev reality, where of course is difficult bit a centre of excellence and knowldege wherever it would be.
My thesis is for a "Living Museum" of Racing Dinghys primarily I suggest the more usual projects such as Firefly's, Merlin's, Hornet's, Finns', FD's Phantom's etc., but not exclesive indeed inclusive but certainly where enthusiasts and interested persons could go to
A. Watch boats being restored (Like the truly excellent Viking skib Museet in Roskilde Denmark.)
B. Get advice.
C Buy wrecks for restoration.
D Just get up close and talk "dirty" about racing dinghies, boats etc.
E A library of books. - for reference rather than borrow but with copying fascilities.
F Workshop fascilities and a stock of timber, bits and pieces old (From unrestorable wrecks or chandlers scran bins and new.
G Hire of vintage dinghies to selected punters for events.
H A Mini conference & social centre.
I A shed of sheds!
Non profit making not even manned/womanned by rota!
Simples.

It already is:

A. Watch boats being restored (Like the truly excellent Viking skib Museet in Roskilde Denmark.)
Forum has regular links to websites showing boats being restored.

B. Get advice.
Forum is established and well known as being the place to get advice.

C Buy wrecks for restoration.
Wrecks and good boats are all available to buy on the Forum

D Just get up close and talk "dirty" about racing dinghies, boats etc.
David is hanging on your every word

E A library of books. - for reference rather than borrow but with copying fascilities.
Forum members have between them an immense collection of books. Books are lent and pages regularly scanned and sent to others

F Workshop fascilities and a stock of timber, bits and pieces old (From unrestorable wrecks or chandlers scran bins and new.
Wood, parts and even 1ft of brass banding....all sourced through the forum

G Hire of vintage dinghies to selected punters for events.
Boats are regularly leant to other CVRDA members through the forum

H A Mini conference & social centre.
Here we are

I A shed of sheds!

In a virtual sense, I can think of no better description of the forum than a 'shed of sheds'.

It's all of that and more, but you can't touch and feel and smell the shavings, varnish and stockholm tar!

Eyemouth?
The advantage of it all being virtual is that it costs so little. As for the smell of woodshavings and Stockholm tar (epoxy, more like) we each seem to create our own...

AG is right, it would be a museum to rival some of those abroad and certainly since the war the dinghy world has led innovation. The best place would be on an inland water for safe sailing - perhaps Oulton!
