Since you were out there with the camera, I think you should have washed the 'ball down the rest of the leg whilst taking lots of "close up and personal" shots of their presumably tiny willies.

There is an car advert out there at the moment which expresses a similar sentiment only the sailor is the one with style not the motor boat, but I'm sure the advertising agency could re-write the screenplay a little.

Hi all,

there does seem to by a phychological phenomenon at work here similar to the one that afflicts some drivers. The cocooned environment of the boat/car seems to detatch people from the normal constraints on their behaviour and they are prepared to shout and use language that they would not dream of when speaking to someone face to face.

I never have understood what the point of this shouting "up up" is? It seems to afflict some fleets and not others, but as far as I can tell its quite meaningless as a hail in the context of the rules... "Keep clear", or "windward boat" might mean something.

Still, as far as I am concerned the important rules are any that protect my thirty seven year old 1/16in ply topsides...

I had to say "windward boat keep clear" to a boat reaching down the startline today, but at no point was I tempted to scream UP UP UP at him... He would probebly have said "up what?", quite rightly, as I crashed into him!

My guess is that the Fireball wouldn't even remember it, unless you showed the photos...

That kind of rudeness is normally undertaken with a complete certainty, but total lack of any empathy.

But you do see this kind of behaviour at all levels of our sport.....but I am glad to say much less in CVRDA races, which of course was always one of the original intentions.

but what does one do when you see it?

Ignore it and get on with the race.

Spend rest of race with the sole intention of slowing them down in any way possible and hang your own result.

Just think what the heck, this isn't what I race for and retire.

I can think of times when I have done each of these...

I race largely in Denmark and elsewhere in Europe the equivalent in Danish is
Windward båd holde klar af
Which if called in my dodgy Danish Accent would not be understood! UP UP UP is understood everywhere! It's also shorter and carries well.

If you say it with enough conviction....all those that would understand 'up up up' will understand that.

I might even try it at Roadford.

I bet the same number of people would understand....and the same number take any notice as well.

One wee thing BAD (A with an O over it!) is Danish for Boat and a Bad Fart is not as may be supposed a post curry explosion but a ferry! Just thought 'd clear that up before someone goes toboganning with one of their boats mixing with that plague the snowboarder!

Danish for Boat

'tis as I thought, but where better than the piste for spreading confusion on Johnny foreigner!

And since we are now so to speak "off piste" (again )

I also like the Swedish equivalent of "A miss is as good as a mile" told to me in best quality Swenglish as translating to "Clorse does nort shoot the raabit."

I also like the German for "Ginger nuts:"

"Ich habe sprengestoffe in mienen doodlesac!" (which my daughter confidently asserts refers to Bagpipes.)

I might even wear a Swedish chef's hat for the occasion (it has been said that I sail like a muppet. It has also been said that I sail like Ainsley but I think they meant Ainslie Harriott)
