Unknown 13'-2" dinghy found in Arabia

Post by Saudi Sailor »

Found next to a sand dune - a 4.04 meter long 1.55 meter wide fiberglass dinghy - at least 30 years of age - double skinned bottom with a pivoting centerboard but not much else. Well I did stumble across a triangle of fiberglass (the spraydeck) nearby in the desert and amazingly it fits!

Does anyone know what sort of a boat this is?

That's unkind... I may not have liked the results, but thought definitely went into the things. That transom does look Skippery to me. A shot of the bow area and the bowsfrom the side would be very helpful...

Trouble is the Skippers were 12' (3.66m) and 14' (4.27m) long...Anyone know anything about the Skipper Sabre mentioned in Dinghy Recognition?

Of course...the description of the Interclub (the UK one) is of a round bottomed boat with a removeable foredeck, designed by Milne. Anyone got a picture? Nicely worked out, Saturday Girl!

This part of the bow looks great - but there is a nasty two foot long crack in the skin at the stern that will be a challenge to repair.

That looks like a club registration number painted on the bow.

You may be able to find the rest of it or some history at Half Moon Yachting Association (based in Dhahran)

Wow ! I am amazed that anyone in the U.K. would have been able to identify those letters and suggest I check the Half Moonbay Yacht Association. I'm the Sunfish Fleet Captain for that very same association and have indeed rifled thru a filing cabinet or two - trying to find some info on a few of our antique and usually abandoned yachts.

I'm hoping that one of the CVRDA will be able to dig up the manufacturer, date and model name plus the proper size of the sail for this old plasticated dinghy. I'm hoping that the clue "Intercub" or "Interclub" rings some bells amongst your members.

PS we are mad keen on vintage SUNFISH here in Arabia and have 150 - all thirty years old - on our beach.

Hi SS,

Ah the Sunfish! - second only to the famous Beachcomber in lateen rigged dinghies :D

viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1881&p=14605&hilit ... ber#p14605

All I have on the Interclub is one page in Burrett:
LOA 3.96m
LWL 3.66m
Beam 1.52
Sail area9.66 sq m with 7.43 sq m spinnaker
Designed by Peter Milne
Manufactured by Richmond Marine

Sail insignia was "ic" with unusually only two battens. (No photo, just a drawing) and a stayed mast.

PY was estimated at 100 in old money (compares to an Enterprise at 98 and a Wayfarer at 97)

The hull crack does not sound too difficult - I would put a hatch in one of the benches to get to the inside and fibreglass it then do the gel coat from the outside.

Sorting out a rig is likely to be more difficult given your location. The best bet is to find something with terminal hull damage and salvage all the bits.

Thanks a lot to everyone who responded. I found this picture of what an INTERCLUB has evolved into by 2007. It has changed in many ways over the ~30 years. Although my vintage boat doesn't have much curvature along the top edge - the 2007 model has recovered the upwards "swoop" that was shown in those black and white line drawing of the very old wooden Interclubs. If anyone ever finds more photos of my model year as it looked ~30 years back, please send me the link.

There are 2 interclubs, one American, one British. The one with the una rig is the American one.
