the CVRDA online....as it was then

Post by Ed »

Amused me to see:

http://web.archive.org/web/200410240847 ... pipex.com/

It wasn't that good.....but I am sure it wasn't this bad either!

This wasn't the first version....but earlyish...Reckon it is about time we changed again....to some cool wordpress or joomla site.

cheers

Surely Ed, it ain't broke...

If the software was designed before 1965 and is greater than 25 years old, it qualifies for CVRDA?

I like it that I can post pictures, fonts and other expressive things and yet the security seems to have been capable of avoiding spammers.

This remains IMHO the best and most effectively and yet freely moderated forum thats out there.

Absolutely, not even a case for the walnut shells!
It ain't broke, we all understand it, it works very well, and most more "modern" systems need more band width and computing power. Never ever be leading edge with computing, it tends to be bleeding edge.

maybe,

but there is....or should be more to the website than just the forum.

I wasn't suggesting removing the forum....but simply ...possibly....thinking about just....updating the website....a little....teeny bit...

Ed, haven't you noticed the ludditic tenancy - refusal to accept epoxy etc! - Computer upgrades perish the thought!
Seriously I think the bandwidth and server capacity issue might hit you and cost a lot of money tampering with computer systems usually does!

Ah yes, now I see what you are talking about. Is this to do with the more fixed elements of the site?

The Mission statement and "Events" and news elements work well, but the elements to do with "how to do" are a little more difficult. I was thinking "only the other day" as I read about filletting with epoxy and rebating this or scarfing that, that an awful lot of what is said on this forum assumes considerable prior knowledge of the subject, be it Wood, Glass or whatever, as well as considerable historical overview. A "Glossary" would work well for example.

So is this about making more use of the Dinghy data Wiki's and things? (I haven't a clue how to do a wiki which is probably just as well)

That being said, the site is easily navigable by people like me, and has quite alot of unused bits that remain under construction.

It reminds me of someone's limmerick here on this forum I think.

A Computer technician from Tring,
Constructed a website from String.... :D
...and so on
...or something like that.

Moderators and others please note I am NOT trolling for any more doggerel verse. But the reference seemed apt. :|

Ed,
Neil was going to load the Tiki Wiki software ever since Roadford but he's obviously been too busy as nothing's happened.
Tiki is CMS as well as wiki so covers the options and it's free. And I can link in existing databases and code to Wiki pages.

In the meantime there's ben a lot of background database work and things people can't see such as php pages and a database for the events which is due to go live very soon and work on the Dinghy database to get the basic data into a database format for displayed on a common php page or tikiwiki page rather than one individual page per design.

Once we get wiki software in action, the hints and tips section can get a massive update to become the "Best of the Forum Advice" and a proper reference for repairs and renovations.

Patience is a virtue..........

I'd like to echo the comments made by my learned colleagues - this is far and away the best site for information and reasoned comment.

Just as an FYI, I am also a member of a biking forum that was recently 'upgraded' - except that everyone had to re register. They are still trying to work out how many good contacts this has cost them...

Neil and Ed - whatever you do I'm sure it will be great.....

Now there's an idea for a thread...(Banter(m) of course. Sorry David, another weak pun)

(With the one on singlehanders)

"Which bike does your boat resemble;...and why?"

One for DSM or First beat David?? :D :P

Sorry Michael....
Abort, Retry, Ignore

Once upon a midnight dreary,
Fingers cramped and vision bleary,
System manuals piled high
and wasted paper on the floor,
Longing for the warmth of bedsheets,
Still I sat here doing spreadsheets:
Having reached the bottom line,
I took a floppy from the drawer.
Typing with a steady hand,
I then invoked the "save" command
But got instead a reprimand:
It read, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"
Was this some occult illusion?
Some maniacal type intrusion?
These were choices Solomon himself,
Had never faced before.
Carefully I weighed my options...
These three seemed to be the top ones.
Clearly I must now adopt one;
choose: Abort, Retry, Ignore?
With my fingers pale and trembling
Slowly toward the keyboard bending,
Longing for a happy ending,
Hoping all would be restored
Praying for some guarantee,
Finally I pressed a key.
But what on the screen did I see?
Again "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"
I tried to catch the chips off guard -
I pressed again, but twice as hard,
But luck was just not on the cards,
I saw what I had seen before.
Now I typed in desperation
Trying random combinations.
Still there came the incantation
"Abort, Retry, Ignore."
There I sat, distraught, exhausted,
By my own machine accosted
Getting up, I turned away
And paced across the office floor.
And then I saw an awful sight
A bold and blinding flash of light
A lightening bolt that cut the night,
And shook me to my very core.
The PC screen collapsed and died.
"OH NO! MY DATABASE!" I cried.
I heard a distant voice reply,
"You'll see your spreadsheets...nevermore!"
To this day I do not know
The place to which our data goes.
Perhaps it goes to heaven,
Where the angels have it stored.
But as for Productivity, well,
I fear this has gone straight to Hell.
And that's the tale I have to tell -
Your choice: Abort, Retry, Ignore.
Simples.

Michael,

sadly, once one gets away from this forum, getting the sort of well educated response that you question begs for is a rarity! So, we'l have to keep it here.

But as you asked.... I would give the following answer:

The Contender = Honda VFR, 94-97 (eg, still in the 750cc format, FR-FV). Not the fastest but the best all round there is!

The 505 = Honda Fireblade. Simply the best - nothing more needs saying

A Smokers Merlin = Black Shadow..... oozes class in everything it does.

I hope that I never have to choose between the bike and the boat for both are part of the great pleasures of life. And yes, there are other features biking and sailing performance dinghies share.... no wonder then that so many sailor bike and visa versa

I had an NSU Quickly (racing version!), a Raleigh Runabout moped which always went better when the welding on the silencer split, and last but not least a Francis Barnett Plover with a Villiers 9C engine 149cc and a lovely big brass flywheel with a spun aluminium cover which I kept polished to the nines until I hit a wall and bent the crankshaft. I paid 10/- for it and restored it and ran it for about 4 years. Now if I had kept those they would be worth more than all the boats I have put together (and that's what all my boats have needed - put together). But personality wise what does this say about me!!?
