The clue may be in "old" and van having followed a few vans up reasonable hills in Hampshire and Surrey recently and found them struggling to a point of collapse, I sympathise.

Thanks for the info. Will follow up. I recall sailing against Stuart Gurney when I was crewing Tom Shucksmith - but I doubt he will remember me. Crews seem to be forgotten very easily!!

So while I was waiting at the top of the gangway in a Cowes Marina on a windless day while crewing in a Swan European Champs, two esteemed owners met close by and the conversation ran:

First: I say, anything happening at the Squadron?
Second: No, nothing only a few crews hanging around making the place untidy.
First: They really should keep them out of the way.

I'd like to see them sail single handed!

According to Masefield, Quinquiremes row (with 5 banks of oars) so no good. We're used to the Matthew in Bristol so his Spanish galleon might be interesting and I'd love the cargo but I'd probably get the "Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack" and its firewood and cheap tin trays
