This could be bad for your health!!

Post by Michael Brigg »

Anyone else seen this from Boats and outboards?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/apexauctio ... 255242403/

Not that many racing dinghies perhaps, but still looks rather mouthwatering. I would have another cold shower, but the plughole is already blocked up from previously ripped up fivers.

Some nice looking (river) punts,

a lovely sailing Triple Skiff,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/apexauctio ... 255242403/

and could this be a "flying liferaft" hanging from the rafters??

...and this centreboard dinghy looks powerful. Any ideas?

Looks like a kind of Flying 15, with a centrboard.

I shall have to try and get up to Rochester to have a look around. Anyone else live near there?

Gosh what a wonderful selection!

When are they coming up for sale? Where are they now? At Turks in Rochester?

I particularly like these:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/apexauctio ... 255242403/

What on earth is the first one?

I wonder if any of these used to be stored in Old Man Turks private boathouse by Cookham Bridge?

When I was little I lived in Cookham and the first boat I ever had was a kayak and although we lived close to the river, it was a bit heavy for me to carry to the river.

My mum said she would sort it and asked old man turk whether I could keep my canoe in the punt rental boathouse, which I did. Later, I learned that when younger, she used to race punts with him in the mixed doubles up and down the upper thames.

Always rather liked the idea of having a punt and enjoyed punting on the Isis whilst at school in Oxford. Not point here on the Tamar though......far too muddy.

Ed and Michael,

Re the centreboard FF... I think this might just be something really 'rare'.

Go back to the picture again and look at that rise of floor, then ask yourself what it reminds you off.

From what I can see of the picture, the hull looks flat bottomed and what you can see there, marked out by the interior line of the hull, looks to be another flat panel.

The trouble is - there are is not enough of the boat in the picture!!

But...could this be the believed long lost 'Calypso' - the 20 ft or so fireball from the board of peter milne?

I reckon the first of these is a racing canoe. I thought at first it was a rather odd scull, but then you look at the length, the absence of riggers and the presence of a seat non sliding seat facing the bow, and what looks like a foot board and it becomes clear. Now I've worked that out it looks good to me too!

Michael,

I've tried scaling it up from various items there but in the end, someone has to go and see what this is!! It is so close to a 'ball.... and yes, it could be a very early one (washboards on the foredeck are a give away of date) BUT looking at that cockpit, my money is on Calypso.

If so - then it really is a case of (cue Chesney Hawkes) "I am the one and only"....

have we ANYONE near Chatham?

are they that rare?

I am pretty sure I have seen one of the 20ft fireballs and I have heard of another.

One used to be part of Andrew Thornhill's collection - I have some photos, I will try and dig out for you.

Bob-Merc would certainly know, it was in the collection in the sheds on Bristol docks that Andrew had when Bob was looking after them.

From there......I think these boats went Lowestoft.....so presumably part of that collection now....with Jamie Campbell.

It is however possible that Andrew held on to it.....but it doesn't seem like the kind of boat that he would of kept, so most probably gone over to the east.

Unless that was something else......I will dig out photos to see.

cheers

In this picture there is a ladder on the left side. Assuming that the rungs are a standard 9inch step, this gives a scaling device that on a rough measure puts this "Fireball" at at least 20feet...

scroll along a couple of pics to here,...

What do you make of the red hull in the background. An interesting old "hooked" handle on the daggerboard. I'll try and see if there are some other "background2 shots of this.

Re the mystery ff/fireball.

I can remember sailing something similar in Aberdovey out of Frongoch boatyard in the eighties.

It was 20ft with trapeze, very quick and quite stable till the trapeze wire broke dumping me in the briny!!!.

I think it went to the graveyard in the sky as it was quite rotten but a blast to sail.

A CVRDA meeting at Rochester is in order.
This is of course mainly film stuff, but there are other gems, a visit to Mikes main yard at Shepperton is always fun, and if one had the time and money......
Mike Turk provided the Shallop and liveried oarsmen that my first wife and I were rowed away from Fishmongers Hall in, after our wedding reception (As far as Speakers Steps not long with a rising tide - Very Man for all Seasons.). Fond memories of a couple of over-ethusiastic Merlin Rocket sailors trying to stow away and ending in the river in December!
Those Punts would be great for the Bridge at Upingham.
The Flying liferaft my be the only example based on Uffas Lifeboats, I THINK I read it was built but never flew. Doubtless someone knows.
Looks great fun I shall go if I can.
Simples.

david

I'd go too but would need to be in a straight jacket (my usual attire these days) as I'd be worried that I'd see something that I thought was really worth saving and would end up bidding... and knowing my luck, would win!!

Hannah is at Uni in Rochester, currently at home may be I should take her back instead of sending her by train.

I love the look of the calypso. I am very tempted to make a bid but probably wont. Is there a mast boom or any rig at all?
