Free Merlin Rocket
Free Merlin Rocket
I have just received this email. Any takers. I have the mans mobile number for those interested.
Cheers Roger
I have a vintage Merlin that I would like to give away to someone who would make use of her.
Number 2095, Bob Hoare built. Shown as Jim's Joy in my old MR members book. The hull and decks are sound, original and slightly newer masts. Sails. Boat & Road trailer available too. Some tender loving care required to bring her up to speed.
Do you maintain a list of people who might be interested.
Kind regards
Leonard Young

Re: Free Merlin Rocket
The current book shows 2095 to be a Watts designed "Wotnot" built by John Freeman and called Wotfree.

Re: Free Merlin Rocket
I think he's confused its 2065 a Hoare Mk 9 assuming the name is right.
Simples.
Re: Free Merlin Rocket
That would make sense
Re: Free Merlin Rocket
It would have been built just before Half Cut which is also a Bob Hoare boat. There's something nice about his boats from that era - they always look well proportioned and balanced and they seem to be built to last too.

Hi Roger,
I might be since I live near Heathrow so it is unlikely to be that far away, is this one of the traditional Merlins or the broader flatter shape that they evolved into?

Re: Free Merlin Rocket
The proctor 9 is well known example of the earlier narrow sort. Though Bob Hore may have made his own variations to the design. The merlin website has a good design guide which will tell you more.

Re: Free Merlin Rocket
The Merlin I had briefly was also a Bob Hoare Built '9 and was a joy to sail. Sadly she had been epoxied all over and that led to transom failure which the next owner seemed to be capable and willing to repair.
