Starting them young

Post by Demon »

After chatting with Solentgal Saturday, i thought i would post a little pic of my lad.
He is now 21 months old, but the pic was taken close to his first birthday.
Put him in the 420 yesterday, and he didnt want to get out. Looks like i have got a very light weight crew :P

Cheers

Mark

Getting the grandson interested in sanding and varnishing is important too...

Gently does it!

Roger I seem to remember you saying that to me as I was up to my knees in the Thames launching for the Tideway!

It would seem relevant here to draw attention to the"Thamesis Junior Cup" run in tandem with the Elizabeth Cup Firefly open. On the Saturday, 2pm 9th April.

Last year's event report here...

Perhaps our own assotiation should consider a similar event of our own.

My 2 have both won the youngest competitor award at the Nationals when still toddlers, but the older one goes to secondary school in September, so we do need some younger blood! I imagine he will be racing his own Mirror at Whitefriars, and my daughter will be out in her Puffin. The puffin handicap of 200 turned out to be a bit low last time, so not sure what PY to give...

I have to confess that when I was restoring Secret Water I had everything in place except for one vital part of the centreboard lowering/hoisting system namely the block which is attached to the hog right forward in the bow - rather a gaffe. Working on my own in the garage I wiggled my way as far forward as I could and then stopped realising that the limited amount of room would make it most unlikely that I would escape and would in years to come be found as a set of skeletal remains, block and shackle in hand with Flanders and Swann playing endlessly on the CD player (waiting for the gas man to call?!!) I managed to get myself out and drew on the services of a passing young lad of 6 years old who squirmed his way into the bow and attached the block and thereafter was able to boast to his pals that he had helped out. The young lad is now about 6'4" and 16stone and props for the local rugby team so would have been of no use as a crew at all!!! There is a lot to recommend the Victorian urchin chimney sweep approach!!!!

PS Ed, you had that young daughter of yours working like a navvy. Her sandpapering hand is a blur in the photo. Slave driver.

Yes Polly was always very useful, and still is when she is nearby. She has grown some but is still small enough to wriggle under the foredeck.

All mine crewed for me when still in Nappies!!. At the time it was joy rides in Phantom, and the Mirror and then Lark.

Perhaps they will crew for me when I am in same, in a (not too) few years.
