novice seller International moth mk III

Post by cheyny »

This is a challenge for me - my neighbour heard that I sell on Ebay for a living and asked if I could sell her husbands Mk III Skol International Moth K3517 which has been tied up to the roof of the garage for many years! This is a million miles away from what I normally sell. When I looked on Ebay to get an idea of the market I couldnt find any listings for this. So was directed to this site by a very helpful person on another yachting forum. I guess my questions are where should we sell this beastie and what sort of price and what information do people look for.
Seems he was a bit of a water fanatic as there is also a windsufer too, and I am certainly out of my depth here!

Hi,

it sounds like it may be a bit of a "project" for someone. Do you know if it is complete (mast, sail, daggerboard, rudder)?

Old boats are particularly difficult to put a value on. My experience is that a (recent) photo of it actually being sailed pushes the bidding up but it does not seem that you are in a position to do that. If it were me, I would make sure there were plenty of photos so that people could see it properly, list it with a very low starting price and hope two people start a bidding war.

Also, it will be a "Mk III" of a particular design of Moth. If you can post some photos here, one of our Moth experts should be able to tell you more.

Not very helpful I know but to give you an idea of how unpredictable prices can be, without seeing photos, I would guess anywhere between £30 and £300.

Where in the country are you?

Skol Mk 3 is a Rondar built glass fibre International Moth, Mk III must be fairly early 70s.

Folks, give the chap some fair guidelines on possible value because I'm interested in it, but don't do ebay...

You need to tell the assembled whether there is a road trailer and/or launching trolley (road trailer will have a ball hitch and some kind of suspension, launching trolley will have neither), and at the very least photos of the sail spread out on the lawn (to demonstrate free of mouse holes or not) and the rudder and centreboard would help. Without that it would be very difficult to establish whether what anyone offers you is reasonably fair. Oh and mast as well: people will want to see that its straight!

Many thanks chaps the first challenge will be to unsuspend it from the garage roof (this is what husbands are for!), then determine what it has and hasnt got. It is in Horley near Gatwick.

Hi Jim,

a good bet but but I thought a few others reached "Mk3" in some form or other (Magnum, Pearce, Axeman...). Not my specialist subject but a photo should confirm.

Where does K3517 fit on the timeline? I think the others are probably 1980s as opposed to 70s

I wonder if Paul Young at Rondar has company records going that far back. They've moved a few times though so would have cleared thing out.

Definitely appears to be a Skol III - the Skol I was narrower and not self-draining, the Skol II had the same hull shape as Skol I but s/d and with a stern tank, as seen in other pics on this forum.

It must have been one of the last built - it doesn't appear in the lists in the 1975 yearbook, but the highest number there is k3544, so it would have been built in mid-to-late '74 as there were about 100 new boats each year in those days.

There were quite a few designs that reached Mk 3 in their evolution, so it would have to be advertised as a 'Skol III Int. Moth'.

Wow, look at those prices in the catalogue. I remember thinking about selling on my 'Nervous Breakdown' to buy a Skol and thinking I could not justify spending that much.

I'd like a look at the boat, because I'm interested and its not far from me. If you have't got anyone used to handling boats to assist in the process of taking her down from the garage roof then there might be mileage in killinmg two birds with one stone and having me come over and give you a hand with that, because they can take you by suprise if you're not familiar with what bits do what and which bits are strong. Moths - even Moths of that age - are very lightly built boats and its quite easy to damage them if you're not used to these things. Might also be of some value in spotting which are and aren't boat pieces...

A lot of chat re Skols at present, nice to see another one appear. I would just add that I finally got mine afloat on Monday (see pic on other thread), and had 3 hours of the best fun I've had in ages.... until I lost a gudgeon and had to drift ashore. Repairs under way now, and sailing again shortly I think :)

Just been looking at these photos of the Skol 3 ........she is registered well after the tall rig was in use, so I wonder why she is rigged as she is? It would be interesting to know her history.

That is an International Moth Skol Mk111. Probably built in 1973 to 1975.

Value, depending on condition and completeness of kit, I would suggest £250 to £300 for hull, mast, boom, sails, dagger board and rudder. You may do better selling on Apollo Duck than e-bay.

Taking the hull out of the garage roof shouldn't be too difficult as they are lightly built. Probably weighs about 65lbs, so 2 people can lift it with ease. They can be roofracked.

The Skol is a sweetly detailed dinghy, they are completely outclassed by later Moth designs, but you could have alot of fun.

They were a lightweight racing dinghy so they are quite fragile, the hulls are GRP and will last better than a ply built Moth of the same era.

I agree with Sami that the rig is probably not the original one and it may well have been transplanted from another Hull. The sail is a Low Aspect Anderson Aerosail and if you look closely at the photos you can just about make out traces of the original sail number beginning with a 2 which makes sense as that would place it late 60's (pre tall rig). My Shelley Mk 1 (number 2883) has a similar low aspect rig by the same sailmaker. This renumbering leads me to think that the sail may have changed hands (or boats) more than once so the present number may not relate to the Skol at all. It does look an interesting prospect though and if Jim C does go to see it it would be nice to get some more info/ feedback.

cheers

Ian
