Xmas Idea - 100 Ultimate Sailing Adventures
Xmas Idea - 100 Ultimate Sailing Adventures
A CVRDA xmas contest.
At Bosham event this year, I extended my expertise for getting the prize for 'amusing' the race-officers.....rather than winning anything! Over the years, I think I have got more of these type of prizes than any other kind. At Baltic Wharf SC they used to have a prize for the most capsizes in the year.....but gave up after I had won it every year since I joined.
Anyway, I got a book, called: 'Ultimate Sailing Adventures - 100 Extraordinary Experiences on the Water' which has been fun to read......but to be honest, some of the experiences didn't quite cut it for me: 'Sail up the Thames', 'Sail in the Shadow of the Sugar Loaf', 'Eat Sushi at sea' and 'Survive in a liferaft'.....mmmmmmm Well I just thought we could do better. No....that we 'personally' had done better!
So I have a proposal:
Lets see if we can get the CVRDA '100 Extraordinary Personal Sailing Experiences' written and published on the website by the end of the Xmas break.
Now Don't start writing anything yet! and don't give away your ideas or blow your cover yet!
We will get them all uploaded (somehow) over xmas, but you can start thinking about what some of your best experiences are that you would most like to share.
We can thrash out some basic 'rules' over the next few weeks and agree it all by the beginning of December.
Off the top of head, I would suggest that everyone can submit 10 experiences, with a word-limit of 200 words each? And one image? Would that work?
We could then establish an editorial committee and select the 100 best experiences. Who knows, maybe we can twist the arm of the committee and get a couple of prizes!
It has been ages since we had a XMAS challenge and to be honest the quizzes just got too complex (and anorachy) to handle.
So....put your thoughts down here on the mechanics of the event, but don't post your 'personal experiences' yet.....keep those for Xmas.
What do you think?

Ed, good idea but I'm not quite sure what you're after, is it 'best' sailing experiences or 'most extraordinary'?

Don't know.....
guess we could do either....or both....
no rules yet....what do you think....what is your preference?
I think my only thought is that it should be a personal experience rather than a second hand one.

I guess a sailing experience can range from a 5 minute plane with spray flying everywhere to a long adventure to a monumental cock up.
Trouble is, after 35 years sailing, I'm struggling to think of anything, mainly due, I suspect, to a very bad memory, as Iknow I've had great moments!

Re: Xmas Idea - 100 Ultimate Sailing Adventures
The funniest anecdotes are usually the most potentially embarrassing, and always get bigger in the re-telling - gusts causing a keel boat to capsize have already become legendary squalls that would have torn the tops of tress.... The best sailing moments are often very good to hear about and like the cruising chronicles in the now gone Dinghy Magazine, often leave you wanting to go do the same yourself.
Of course we know that the latter, when one actually goes and does it, often leads to the former........
So perhaps everyone should be asked to provide one of each, to encourage each other to every higher feats of wing-nuttyness....

This can very easily be a case of "The best parts of my true stories are the bits that didn't happen to me!"
Extraodinary experiences...
Hmmm;
Is there to be censorship applied? This could very well reduce the pool!

Can we include boating in general. Lots of scope in the Rowing side of things

I look forward to posting mine, involving a laser and almost losing a centreboard in a force 5 with 15ft waves!

Surely Nessa, your contribution has to be about sucumbing to temptation!Nessa wrote:how about a gust that capsized a Vision that led to two years off sailing!! Incredible but true!!
Aggamemnon,
Mogo,
That french thing,
The Kestrel,
Phantom Menace,
...and so on?
Not to mention the seduction sequence of aquiring Aggamemnon. The Pleasure of aquisition.
I would certainly be able to find some ultimate sailing moments wrapped up in a handshake and a pocket full of used notes..."he gave her his town house and his racing horses
each meal she ate was a dozen courses
had a million dollors worth of nickles and dimes
she sat around and counted them all a million times"
(Minnie the Moucher, Cab Calloway)
The thrill of opening someones old garage to find...
