Xmas Idea - 100 Ultimate Sailing Adventures
Re: Xmas Idea - 100 Ultimate Sailing Adventures
We are all going to find it hard to beat jumping aboard a media boat at an event with the world's press watching, swearing at a driver and diving overboard...

Hi,
Nice to see the Finns enforcing Law and Order. What a stupid thing to do, not Ben but the pratt driving the camera boat. With the lenses available today they should not have been that close. There had already been complaints lodged that the TV helicopters and press boats were affecting the racing. It's bad enough having to have, races that fit in with advertising slots let alone have them F....... up the racing. Sailing last sport to sell out to TV Moguls.
We had a similiar incident at a European Championship with a RO who could not set a course properly and then refused to move buoys when the wind shifted. We had several races which consisted of a running start, reach, fetch, reach etc. The RO sailed? a motor yacht funny thing that. My crew a then current Laser Junior National and European Champion became so incensed by this that he taped to the back of his bouancy aid FOD. The said Race Officer asked what it ment and he told him. We were summoned to explain his actions rule 69. However it did not go to protest as the fleet agreed on mass about the course and the general running of the event, the RO and race committee, dropped the action. Needless to say the said fleet have never returned to this venue.
One thing that you can bet on for certain is that the press coverage will be looked at in fine detail re :Weymouth after this and Ben's done everyone taking part a favour.
I would also like to know why the press boat wasn't thrown off the course and out of the event? Power of the dollar?
Cheers Al

Hi Neil
Married life seems to have mellowed you, or is it that electronic fag that you smoke.
Cheers Al

There was something similar in the Sydney 18s in the bad old days of the 1960s......a spectator boat was smack in the way when one tacked and caused it to capsize, so the skipper swarmed up the mast onto the launch and chinned the driver. And why not?
When the 'show' and the media become more important than the competition, then the rot has gone too far; it's already like that in many sports.
