Mmmmmmm....

Lets check the clues;

1) Red & white - Festive colours ?
2) Nice bits of decorative wood - Could be made by Elves ?
3) Interesting streamlined shape - for quick worldwide deliveries ?
4) Wide section that could carry lots of weight - Carrying a fat jolly character ?

My guess is that it's what Santa is hoping to using this weekend ?
Just haven't worked out yet where the Reindeer can sit.

More clues needed

Ho, Ho, Ho.

Yeah, don't forget, that Santa could store his reindeer at those bulges on the side of the hull.

Day 21:
She's Gerry built but you wouldn't ever describe her as such.

Day 23: The designer shares a name with a manufacturer of abrasives, particularly the old fashioned 'cabinet' or 'glass' papers.

Can't believe you've all been fooled by the clues.

Took me a while but, surely this is the mystery boat !

Hello and Merry Christmas everyone,

I think that Max is on the right track when it comes to the class of boat, but I don't believe that he has plumped for the right one. Marcus picked up on some vital clues a while back and having done a bit of research myself I am now convinced that he was right. I won't give the game away for those who are still puzzling away other than to say that you will need to boldly go where no man has gone before in search of the "final" answer otherwise it may just drive you "wild" with frustration.

Cheers

It's not the old 'Wild Front Ear' is it?

Don't remember that one being self-draining. I think it was yellow when I sailed against it a few times back in the 1990s. IIRC, it was designed with some 505-like features.

And the answer is?
Not a Flying Fifteen, National 18, 505, Firefly, Salcombe Yawl, Chichester Harbour OD, Moth or a Sailability boat (thanks Nessa, not quite but almost ready for one!). Loved the Peter Milne 'Virago' suggestion, worth researching if you have a moment, perhaps there's a survivor out there somewhere? She's not built of 'Unobtainium', nor alloy, but of cedar strip to a design buy Paul Oakey, a gifted amateur designer who I'm not aware designed any other boats. Her planking extends past the transom by 15mm or so. Maximum beam of 6'5" is measured at 10 feet from the bow, something that makes the boat difficult to envisage when she is only 12 feet long. The weird bump on the hull is a measurement station, the rules strive to keep the water line beam above a measurement. This design is built narrower than this but flares out at the station. Weird but not as weird as the one that was built without topsides above the waterline forward of the shrouds in an attempt to exploit a rule change which unlimited the thickness of the hull skin at this point! Sailing his own designed and built boat, (and I'm reliably lead to believe with sails he'd made too) Paul went on to win several races at the National championships in a fleet of more than 50 boats. Early boats from this class were clinker and a 'clinker trophy' is presented at the Nationals for the best placed home built boat. Despite being smooth skinned, Paul's boat won this 5 times!
This isn't Paul's boat, but a successor built in 1995 by Gerry Ledger to Paul's design. This boat is historic developmentaly as it is the first to be with a double floor and to be self draining. This was at a time of revolution in dinghy design, with the march of the mass produced self draining plastic fantastics by RS, Topper etc. The vast majority of N12's built and all the new designs after this date have been self draining.
She is a Wild Front Ear Design National 12, sail no. 3415, Wild Thyng.
And the winner? Several of you were so nearly there when the answer was revealed in open forum by someone who's built 2 of the 5 wild front ear boats. Sorry Marcus, but it's like having Einstein in your Physics GSCE class, I'm not counting your answer.
Nessa had narrowed it down to a 12 and was working her way through the 3500boat database on the N12 website. jpa_wfsc was here too, almost getting the design. Angus- got the design and guessed every boat but the right one when Marcus mailed. I think Max deserves a mention too, this clearly lead him to much thought provoking research. I don't think any of you four will be at Roadford so I'll endeavour to get a beer to you at whichever event you're doing next year. Except Max- Coke for you!
And Ed- you're right. They're a clever bunch!
Happy Xmas and good sailing for 2012.
