Coaching/racing weekend at Whitefriars in the early spring
Coaching/racing weekend at Whitefriars in the early spring
Just thought I'd start a new thread on this one, over from the 2012 fixtures thread.
How much interest is there in John and I, possibly with Nessa's help (though Nessa, after such a long lay off, you may prefer to spend the day sailing?) spending a day running through some race coaching, followed by 2 or 3 races on the Sunday.
Thinking March time for this, so camping might not be an option, but we would be able to put up some people on floors, and there are B&B's nearby (some of which may have pubs attached) for those who prefer comfort!

Interested in theory. Depends on work and if I can find a boat in the brambles and if its all there.

Yes, we'd be interested, especially as it's day trip-able.

Re: Coaching/racing weekend at Whitefriars in the early spri
We could probably drum up some local old / classic boats (with or without people) to reduce the need for cvrda boats to come for this.... certainly could use our fleet of Comet Trios for those parts of the event where wildly different performances could be difficult.
This would involve some expenses - perhaps £20 per Trio per day so if say 10 cvrda members used them that would be £10 each. Plus ploughmans lunch and rescue boat costs... say £8 per head.
£18 per day using WSC boats £8 using our own: If we preferred to use our own boats thats fine.. what is the general feeling?

Seems very reasonable to me - count me in.

I'd been thinking Classics specific coaching, but actually the Trio idea for those who want is better - the Trios have similar behaviour to many classic boats anyway, with the very stiff mast, low powered control lines and soft sails.

Trios are excellent as training boats, and too often overlooked! Next year looks frantic for me as her indoors has very inconsiderately booked herself into some sports day thing in London in July, followed by another disabled sports day thing soon after, so she keeps mumbling about going to things called 'test events'. I have no idea what she's on about. As welll as all that I have lots of 'proper' training to do myself which doesn't involve standing around with a tape measure.
That being said, the family lives near Whitefriars so I may subject myself to a visit and come down, but yes, preferably to sail not to coach.

Below is the provisional layout of the coaching weekend.
If you are coming, please could you let us know as soon as you know (and I know that this might not be for a while yet!) and also let us know what you will be looking for out of the weekend. If you can only make one day, that is fine, whichever day - they won't be quite stand alone days but can be made to work that way.
I hope to have some ideas on where to stay posted up soon, if not campervanning or tenting (brrrrrrr).
CVRDA Race Coaching weekend 24/25 March
Saturday
9.00 Club open for early arrivals
10.00 Arriving, unpacking boats ready to rig
10.30 Briefing – what you hope to get from the weekend (I hope we will have an idea of this beforehand)
1045 Boat rigging, with advice from experts as to getting the best set up for your boat, where needed, showing how sail controls work
11.45 Changed and on water for a short pre-lunch race
12.15 Lunch, with discussion (& video) of what we have seen whilst sailing
13.15 Mini races for starting/first beat/running practice. Windward-leeward courses Video recording
15.00 Break, with video playback
15.30 ½ hour race to see how things have progressed
16.00 Pack away
17.00 Final get together of day at club
17.30 Pub for well earned dinner
Sunday
10.00 Briefing, looking at what can be improved from Saturday, what we will be doing
10.30 On water for mini races, looking at different points of sailing – Triangular courses, video recording.
12.30 Lunch with debrief on the morning
13.30 Longer races, putting everything together that has been learned
15.30 Packing boats away
16.30 Final debrief and goodbyes

I am coming and I think I am delivering a beachcomber! I was going to bring my moth, but it is likely to be still in pieces around then. I think Nigel said he was bringing his megabyte, in which case I will bring mine!
I have family in Swindon and Trowbridge, so could stay there, but might prefer soemthing closer. I am not good at getting up early. Are dogs allowed in the club grounds?

oh, and I have video kit if you want to use it - onboard and hand held. I could potentially bring her indoors as dingyycrew/safety boat driver/crew/film person - she is qualified in all those things.

Re: Coaching/racing weekend at Whitefriars in the early spri
To whom are you delivering a Beachcomber, Nessa?
Dogs are allowed, on a lead - supposedly not into the club house, though.
The offer of a video camera and person to use it is very much appreciated, thank you. We have one at the club, and I think Roger W may be bringing one, but if we split into groups, it would be excellent to be able to film each group.
I'll look up places to stay and get something onto here very soon.
