Re: low rider - what model?
Would this be as difficult to sail as the magnum 9.9.
Re: low rider - what model?
Looks like a Magnum of some kind at first shot, but surely not with that sail number. I'm not good at Moths of that age... There were a few Skiffs of that vague style in Aus too I think...
Re: low rider - what model?
The boat looks pretty similar to the one Andrew Ladenberger won the 1989 worlds in, which was KA9115 (or 9133, according to the pictures). Maybe it is one that came to the UK for a worlds, and was sold off over here?
As for are they easier to sail than a 9.9 - yes, I expect so, but not by much...

Re: low rider - what model?
So we're all watching this one then.........
I still don't understand the IM numbering system,......it looks as though boats from Oz were allocated a much higher batch of numbers than the UK.....and I'm sure I have seen duplicate UK boats....modern foilers with older numbers that I have seen on older low riders, unless some sailors have "personal" numbers?
So who will end up with this one?

Re: low rider - what model?
It looks like a 'Wombat' design, which was one of the first professionally-built Aussie skiffs from about 1983-4. Quite similar to a Magnum 5 but heavier and a wee bit slower, but will have lasted better due to being foam-sandwich rather than ply/epoxy.
Landenberger's boats were home-designed and built; after the Wombat the Aussie skiffs got narrower, especially at the transom, and then when the Axeman design by Bloodaxe Boats appeared they basically copied it for a few years.
It might be less tippy than a late Magnum (8, 9, 9.5, 9.9 or 10) but doesn't have any foam in the wings.

Which one? They've had several...solentgal wrote:I still don't understand the IM numbering system
I don't understand them either to be honest, but yes, your observations are correct I believe.
AUS and UK had different numbering systems, but AIUI both have adopted a new scheme recently which has led to lower numbers...
Re: low rider - what model?
Not something someone with a heart condition should be considering, I regret to say, as they look great fun.
Re: low rider - what model?
That may explain why I've seen some oddities then.JimC wrote: but AIUI both have adopted a new scheme recently which has led to lower numbers...

Re: low rider - what model?
this boat is very local to me. I won't be bidding because someone from my club is interested. If he gets it we would then have three low riders racing at Hunts!

Re: low rider - what model?
ha.. yup i even put in a bid,
my research indicates a wombat too, a little on the heavy side but looks like it could be reasonably reliable,
i thought it would be a good toy till my 9.9 is back on the water, however i figured that i would be better off buying more carbon for my current one than buying yet more boats,
did someone on here buy it in the end?
would be great to get together some sort of lowrider nats at some point, working on a handicap system, you just might be able to drag me out of west cornwall.
cheers. dan.

Re: low rider - what model?
I am sorry as I didn't really look at the listing, but has it got a T foil?
Just looked at it, and it hasn't, sorry for my naivety! Good luck with the project! I hope to hear from you soon about it
