Sorry for the late notice but at last I can confirm that the Kielder Water Sailing Club Early Open incorporating the CVRDA Northern Area Championships will be taking place on the 5th and 6th of May 2012 and all CVRDA boats are more than welcome. All competitors sailing boats with a PY of 1199 or less are also invited to join in our annual dam to dam challenge trophy race on Mon 7th May. SI's and NoR can be viewed on http://www.kielderwatersc.org/opens/openevents.html where you will also find a wealth of local information.
There is camping around the clubhouse but this year we have some restrictions placed upon us by Northumbrian Water regarding camper van parking so we cannot tell you to park up in the next door car park..... However there are a number of local sites if you wish to use them. Alec will be running his infamous stay open as long as anyone is awake bar serving Great Heck beers as well as other fine beverages and meals will be available in the clubhouse.
Come and visit the friendliest club in the north on Europe's largest man made reservoir. Please let me know if you need any more information. I would appreciate it if you could send me an indication of your intent to come – Alec needs to know how many barrels to bring! (We have a number of Javelins coming so I suspect several barrels so far...) Contact me on gthumwood(at)aol.com.
Looking forward to meeting you

Graham, Kielder is on my list of places to sail but unfortunately I cant do it this year. Sorry
I hope it goes well. I know Pat and Sandy were talking about going but I believe the camper van isnt finished yet.

No, we wanted to do Keilder also but have now removed out the temporary van conversion and haven't yet got the proper one done, so we can't make it this year. The dam to dam race is still high on my must-do list though.
Good luck with the event and please keep it going even if there aren't many takers for the first year.

Sadly too far away, and too much time away from all the family commitments which come up every weekend. It sounds like a fantastic place to sail, but I'm seeing the 3/4hour it takes to get to Shearwater as a major outing currently.
I too wish the event much luck, and it is good news that the weather appears to be clearing at least a little for it. Really looking forward to seeing the pictures!

Kielder was top of my list for this year, but some shock news from my doctor means that I won't be sailing, at all, this summer.

It was indeed a lovely weekend. The Saturday and Sunday were a bit blighted with very low winds but the hospitality and great group of visiting sailors more than made up for the drifting. Unfortunately the only CVRDA eligible entry was Alec the Bar's Flying 15 and he took one look at Sunday mornings wind after serving fine beers and wines until 5.30 AM and went back to bed.
The Dam to Dam on Monday however was a different kettle of fish... Forcast 6 knots gusting 20 by the time we had run to the far end of the lake it was 20 gusting 30 for the 8 mile beat back. Kirstie and I were planing upwind in the osprey flat out with the main flogging like a machine gun and only the genoa pulling. The final 2 sail reach to the line was one of the best ever and I am still aching but enjoying the memory.
So there is still no Northern champion but maybe next year.... You are of course all welcome to our September Open as well.
