Mirror Rudder Pintle

Post by roger »

One of the new sailors at Shearwater had the bottom rudder pintle pull out of the transom and now resides at the bottom of the lake.
Does anyone have an old Mirror (probably original 60s fitting) rudder pintle hiding in their box of bits.

Incidentally this boat has 58 carved very badly into the inside of the transom. Is this the real number. No sign of any other number on her.

I'll take a look tomorrow - is it one of the little gunmetal coloured ones?

The worry might be WHY it pulled out?

Thanks Rupert,
Yes the gunmetal one.

It is a verytired old boat and the screws have pulled out through the soft wood.
He had trouble with the rudder not staying down and we had a bit of a squall before a heavy shower last night so the force on the old wood was a bit excessive.

There is evidence of a hatch in the aft buoyancy tank but covered in fibreglass matting. We have discussed opening up and drying out and putting a patch of marine ply behind it and the bolting the new one in place.
Thats the plan anyway.

Found one. 3 screws very close together and a tapered pin.

Plan sounds OK, provided you can get ply in low enough down on the inside, and that the transom isn't totally rotten at that point. Otherwise, it might be a case of setting in a small piece of ply. If you use 15 minute setting Araldite, it can be a pretty quick job!

Is it ok to give him your phone number if so landline or moble?

No problem with giving him my number, but there is no charge, it didn't cost me anything - glad it can get another boat back on the water. Pick it up any time, or I can post it down.
