Re: Holt Tideway race
I've just received more details and will ask Pat to put them all up but here's the course. I did it last time and I think it took at least 2.5 hrs...
THE COURSE
The Tideway Race will consist of one continuous race. A down-river leg from Putney to a
buoy placed between Chelsea Bridge and Lambeth Bridge and a return up-river leg from
the turning mark to Putney. The turning mark will be the laid on the day to suit the
conditions with the rounding, port or starboard hand, defined by a flag signal (green or red)
on the “sweeper boat” stationed down-river from the mark. The Race Officer will brief
competitors on the day on which of the bridges will be open and any special requirements
for passing through the bridges. To help reduce the risk of collision in the area close to the
turning mark, it is expected that competitors sailing downriver towards the turning mark will
be required to pass through the middle or starboard hand arches from Battersea Road
Bridge onwards. After the mark rounding, competitors sailing upriver towards Putney are
required to return through the starboard hand arches until they have passed Albert Bridge

Re: Holt Tideway race
Does anyone know of any local accommodation at reasonable rates?
The wraysbury trip was knocking on 7 hours so it means a very early start on Sunday morning or late arrival on Saturday after I finish work, probably arrive in London at 11pm.
I'll do my best to attend, Seems like a once in a lifetime event so not to be missed.

Hi Nick,
I have emailed various people in the area. Hopefully they will get back to you/me soon. You would be welcome to stay with us in Somerset but its a long way round to London.

Great news Nick. Make sure you have a tow rope and anchor. Part of the sailing instructions.

Re: Holt Tideway race
Yes, I saw that. I have the original anchor for vagabond, just need a 20ft line.
The rudder is now secured, so I won't lose it this time !!
Should be a memorable day plus a great photo opportunity.
Btw. Just set up www.jackholtvagabond.co.uk so should gain more interest for future events.

Re: Holt Tideway race
A lightbulb pinged above my head when writing the ad for the club GP14.....we have another fair to average boat which could be brought. I shall ask the person in charge of club boats if I can borrow it.
I asked nicely and I said I could. Now I just need a crew/helm.

Re: Holt Tideway race
Dear All,
I hope that as many of you as possible are coming along this weekend for the Holt 100 Tideway Race. The forecast looks great and it is shaping up to be a classic event. If you are coming then it would be a great help if you could register in advance, that way we will make sure that there is enough food for everybody!
I would also be very grateful if somebody could help me with a problem that I am facing. As the handicapper at Ranelagh I am responsible for working out what each boat should be sailing off. This isn't a huge issue for the boats I see fairly often both at the club and elsewhere. I am struggling however a little with the Vagabond and a vintage Jack Holt designed International Canoe. If anybody could shed some light on yardstick numbers that they have used then that would be great. Even if they don't know the yardstick some idea of what boats they roughly equate to in terms of performance would be useful.
Hope to see as many of you as possible this weekend.
M.J.

Re: Holt Tideway race
Do you want a handicap to work with the current 1000 based PY system?
Or with a CVRDA vintage handicap?
It's not easy to work out an accurate PY for the vintage IC in the new system....but we could make an educated guess for you.
To be honest, it depends on the weather and conditions. On this kind of sail I would think the IC will be roughly equivalent to the classic Merlins, maybe a point or two faster than MR 507....that kind of thing.
I will let Rupert give some suggestions for the Vagabond.
cheers
