Baltic Wharf?

Post by Nessa »

Is there any more information for this? Kestrel, or something smaller?

Previous entries have included Flying Fifteens, Wayfarers and (in club racing) Laser 5000s and Isos. Kestrel will be fine.

Phew, I thought that my sailing an IC there was quite the extreme in bad choices for the water....but a Laser 5K would take the biscuit.

Mind you a Kestrel would be fine. Used to have fun in the Jollyboat, although found it hard to sail to handicap there.

cheers

Saw David H trying to sail the Unit there after we told him NOT to put prolube on the boat. Very funny.

Max Baltic Wharf is actually sailed in Brunels floating harbour, home of SS Great Britain, It is quite a large spacebut is surrounded by building and so gusty and very shifty. Lovely place to sail but quite tricky in a preformance boat.

Baltic wharf is at the bottom end where the docks are at their widest. Above the Great Britain it's quite narrow but from the bottom to the top is almost a mile, and a Head of the Harbour race is usually part of any open there. The prevailing wind blows up the Avon Gorge so is reasonably steady. If the wind is in the North or the South be alert!
I happily sailed a Contender there for a season until a certain Finn came my way.

I love the head of the harbour race. I'd be happy if the event was 2 of them, rather than round the cans racing as well. Haven't been back for a while, though. Maybe I'll keep Saskia out of the shed for a bit longer and bring her down for a play - I can't see the Minisail being much fun on the docks in November!

though I can't see the best ones from November 2006 when the storm blew through. I'll move them over to the gallery later.

Head of the Harbour is my favourite race too now I've managed to get Sandy there early enough to take part in it!

I couldn't sail for 4 months or more after that BWSC meeting in 2006 - did myself some good damage, though the Solo made it through unscathed.

I love the photos with the brightly coloured houses in the background.

As luck would have it Lynne and I should be heading for home via Bristol on the 17th after a week "oop narth". We won't have a boat in tow or any gear with us, but it would be nice to pop along and see what's going on. We spent quite a few pleasant autumnal days wandering round the docks and house-hunting when we thought we were about to move to the area before Lynne got made reduntant from her new job!

So hopefully see you around lunchtime on the 17th......let's hope the autumn weather is as good as it was when we were there last year.
Sami.
