Seventh Heaven

Post by Lukey T »

davidh wrote:Hi Luke...I'll be brief as I don't want to hijack what is otherwise a 'good' thread! Later this month, if not then, sometime in Feb, I'll be interviewing both Jon Turner and Richard Parslow for the new Merlin Rocket book and I am sure the subject of Seventh Heaven will come up time and time again. Come June..............Blithfield, I'll be able to give you the 'inside' track. Of course the boat was also the basis of the grp boats, I'm already in touch with Simon Bagley. But in the meantime, if you have a picture that I can use, I'd love to see it!

Like you, I too have a Smokers (the hull picture on the Merlin Rock Book Facebook page is mine...3025, Smokey Bear)

Am looking at the trip North already...... be good to get up that way, then home via Hollingworth Lake!

Hi David,

Thought I would move this here.
attached is the only picture i have of Seventh Heaven. I will take more when I get chance just a bit tied up with Uni deadlines at the moment to get her out.

The trip up sounds good, if a little epic in proportions. I should know if I have got approval from the committe for the event tomorrow/thursday.

Luke,

have just drooled all over the keyboard, that is one amazing boat!

As it stands, I'll be heading up to West Kirby to 'do' the International 12s mid-week, will spend a day or so up in that part of the world, then will come back via Blithfield 2nd half of Sat/Sunday. I'm not sure what media interest I can get for you but I'll get you in somewhere!

Will get pics of Seventh Heaven (she'll be sailing?) afloat as well.............

David

Sounds like a good few days out. Yeah coverge would be fantastic as I would like the event to grow if this years is successful. We have plenty of water.

Mervyn Allen is bringing '1' Kate aswell with the idea of us hosting a DeMay next year (fingers crossed)

Yeah she will be sailing, got a full season planned for her.

Does anyone have or know of any photos and racing results for Seventh Heaven.

I know the obvious ones but would like to put her complete history together.

I was trying to do this with Sledgehammer but unfortunately did not manage to do so. Hopefully with a boat as famous as Seventh Heaven I can achieve this.

Is this above and beyond what is available in the Merlin Book (1st one).

If not I can go through that and see what there is, but if you already have those, then I am afraid I am not your man!

Luke,

i'll probably be able to help - with both!

Have just checked...sadly can find no reference to Sledgehammer - the smokers was THE boat to have for a season or two so there were a lot built!

As I said, I will soon be interviewing Jon Turner and Richard P so will have more on the seventh Heaven story!

Any information will be brilliant, im going to post on the MROA forum aswell.

I've not read the original MR book completely but I havnt seen any references or pictures of Seventh Heaven, although the book is 1986 i believe she had only won the one then. 84 87 and 88?
Nice to know she had the speed despite being 6 years old.

The data I do have is:

3x Nationals
1x Inlands
1x Salcombe

Yeah I dont think Sledgehammer has done that much, I know she was 'Captain Pugwash' then 'Sie and Er' and then renamed to the current name. Just would have been nice.

Found the SIE and ER name when removing the paint prior to repainting last year. Thats what sort of started the interest in the history really.

Unfortunately it seems she is not in as goof condition as previously thought.

Having got her on the water the last two weekends I have discovered that the case is badly rotten, so she's now back in the garage drying out to determine the extent of the damage.

Oh Luke, total bummer - but a feeling that I've shared with you! I hadn't had 3025 Smokey Bear long when I took the boat to Whitefriars for what was a disaster day when I put my foot through a plank that had been tarted up - but was rotten. Fast forward to Whitefriars a year or so later with SuperCrewJon - as soon as we said in any breeze the boat just fell apart (shroud fixings put in with Rawlplugs)

best hold on to Sledgehammer for now......

Have you seen the latest pictures on the Pure magic F'book page? Firstly Nitro, then the Sheffield Uni team - lots more goodies to come!

Just thought I'd finish this thread off with a happy ending......

After several months and the hard work of Phil Scott and Chris Martin Seventh Heaven returned to the water very successfully at the Blithfield Event.

I'm very indebted to these two and extremely happy to be back sailing.

Luke is being modest.... Seventh Heaven looked simply superb!

An iconic Merlin Rocket -and one with a story to tell!
