yet another moff

Post by roger »

Message from my brother I will try and get contact details.

Posted in Budworth's newsletter recently... International Moth:

A former member of the Club has an International Moth, described as "wide wooden hull in poor condition. Good sails and trailer. Utterly uncompetitive, but potentially good for playing in." It comes with two masts, all the accoutrments, and an excellent trailer. A good DIY project for an enthusiastic sailor.

"we've decided to simply give it away if we can find a taker. Do you have any club members who would like to take it on? It will be a real shame to consign it to the scrapheap. Anyone potentially interested is welcome to come and have a look before making any commitment." Surely you'd like a Moth to join your menagerie!

Hi Roger,
I am definitely interested as it may well be another boat worth saving. There are very few wide Moths that have survived from the 60s and 70s so any that do appear need to be preserved if at all possible.
If you get any more details please let me know.

I have some pics and details for the moth. Sail number 3946. Looks like some of the magnums we have seen on here but I am no expert.
I will pass on email and pics to anyone who is interested. A nice combi with it but the owner would prefer them to go together and not have the boat scrapped.

K-3946 was listed on the (incomplete) Moth register as a Phoenix design, owned by Mrs Midori Claridge (wife of John).

I seem to remember it, it would be a double-chine version of a Magnum 3, should look like this.

Roger hasn't sent me the pictures or any contact details yet, but I am still very interested so it looks like it's down to you and me Stuart as to who is going to rescue it. If it is a Phoenix then I know a bit of the history of the design so it would be an interesting boat to have and should indeed be saved as very few were ever built.

Howdy

I assume this Moff has found a new home - I'm on the lookout for something similar for my son (12) as a restoration project...

Meanwhile I'm breathing life into my Solo no. 133 - hoping to sail it then thought I'd better repair the thwart before we hot the water, so that came off, then the top of the centerboard case is a bit wobbly so that came off...and so on...!

Hello Mothists,
Yes I have been in touch with the owner and have arranged to collect the boat this week.
Once I have it safely back here in Oxfordshire I will post some more details to confirm what design it really is.
The sail number shown in the photos I have seen do not match the boat which is not that surprising as many older boats have secondhand sails from later boats and the numbers don't always get changed.
Anyway the main thing is that it is being rescued and brought into the CVRDA fold so it can be properly assessed and a restoration plan devised.
Regards
Ian M
