Sail insignias I do not recognise
Shame on me! I was donated some sails today, but cannot identify the insignias.
One is a W with pointy ends, almost like a flaming torch, but with a strikethrough.
The other is a garden bird I reckon...
Come on then - start the clock - you all know these...?

The W is a Vitress, the bird is annoying me because I know I have seen it somewhere...

Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
Had to take the laptop up at midnight said she wouldn't be able to sleep without finding out the bird one.
Anyway it is not on here but a useful link: http://www.angelfire.com/jazz/cl16man/S ... 11905.html
and this PDF file http://www.msogphotosite.com/MSOG/pdfpage/mslogo.pdf

Vitress? What an odd idea to use a W shape for a boat beginning with V.
I can't see an entry for Vitress on the CVRDA dinghy database - shocking! Neither does Google reveal anything useful. Truly a lost class then.
Could the bird be a bird of prey, not a garden bird? Can't be Kestrel/Falcon/Merlin/Osprey/Harrier/Hawk and I doubt Googling 'Hobby dinghy' or 'Kite sailing' will help. Like you, I am sure I have seen it before. The sails themselves are smaller than the set of Heron sails I got with them (and both blue).

That bird looks like a Jackdaw or a raven to me. Is there such a dinghy?
The "W" is a bit of puzzle, but it seems to lead to "Bonwitco" boats in Devon.
There is a picture here of their "maker's Plate" with the same Logo.

Here is an Ad for a Bonwitco "With 14" Dinghy. Interestingly advertised with sails. (They make mostly Anglers outboargd dinghies I think.

Looks like a blackbird to me...
I shall have a look at some books later when I finish work.

Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
There is a cawing thing outside which made me also think raven (pic has small beak though?) and I looked up - only a Raven yacht, no pics. This was before I saw the Raven post!!
Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
There is a picture and a few words about the Vitress in Percy Blandford's book 'Sailing dinghies of the world' published in 1973. Seems they are grp but appear to be clinker built, utility boats originating in Norway. Bermudan rigged with a sail area of 102 sq.ft. 4.72m by 1.67m (15'6" by 5'6") coincidentally the picture shows the boat with sail number 105!
Google as With Vitress gives some more pictures - the 'With' bit is the designers name!

Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
I am sure we've worked out what that rook or whatever it is before, but I've forgotten what...
Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
This bird is remarkably like the one that is in the middle of the Wivenhoe O D class insignia. That has slabs of colour round it, but the bird is the same.

Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
The Wivenhoe logo is a red flag with a very small blob of something in the middle I see.
Looking at the boat, my sails are way smaller than that. They are smaller than a Heron's.

Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
We did have a boat with a bird on the sail on a thread a while ago......was it a Wren? Then one turned up on ebay the same.....can't remember exactly what the insignia looked like though....it was a small boat...(9ft?) so that would fit with the smaller-than-Heron sails too.

Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise

Re: Sail insignias I do not recognise
It wasn't a Wren in the end (though we christened it that for want of a name) - it was a Wagtail, but not the Percy Blandford one, another design called a Wagtail. And a couple more of them turned up on the forum after that!
