wondering if i should just use wood glue for the decks when i pin them down or use epoxy resin
thoughts please folks .
just done a bit of reading and it seems epoxy is better ,
wood glue or epoxy ?
Re: wood glue or epoxy ?
I find it hard to think of a time when epoxy isn't the best glue...
In some cases there are other glues that are as good, but as long as the wood is dryish....and it isn't raining, or sub zero then epoxy has to be the best glue.
As a coating, well it may or may not be, but as a glue, hard to beet.

Epoxy - then you don't have to pin it down....

will still need to pin down the bow decks as they have a slight curve to them , but good point you make about epoxy , i can use a lot less pins than i would , if i were to simply use glueGraham T wrote:Epoxy - then you don't have to pin it down....
Re: wood glue or epoxy ?
With plenty of clamps no pins needed at all - I use those cheap spring clamps you find in pound shops. I have seen it done with C shapes cut out of ply and timber wedges. Round the outside the deck fits over the inner gunwhale section so clamping is easy. There are a couple of ways of doing the centre join - either with a gap between the ply sections and a trim section fitting afterwards or with the ply butting together. With the gap method just use scraps of wood screwed into gap to hold the ply down which can be removed afterwards. If butt joining then a piece of stiff wood clamped to the mast gate and bow section of inner gunwhale with timber wedges underneath works well to hold the joint down. Put brown packing tape on anything you don't want sticking in place. I much prefer not to pin decks as I think it looks better.

lots of ways to hold down decks whilst gluing.....
Bags of sand work well.
Lengths of wood off the ceiling work well too.
Also, tieing down with inner-tube bands works well.
use your imagination!

The late great Bob Hoare used house bricks!
Re: wood glue or epoxy ?
Personally I use staples and pull them out again afterwards. You just need to be careful removing them so that you don't end up with a dent to fill between the two tiny staple pin holes.
Re: wood glue or epoxy ?
Speaking of imagination , candles , lino , and a bucket helped cure the epoxy under the boat on a recent repair, worked a treat.Ed wrote:lots of ways to hold down decks whilst gluing.....

On the flip side a lack of imagination and thought , i just varnished the tiller and rudder , but forgot to make a hanging point to dry , so one handed with rudder held aloft in the other hand went in search of my hammer and nails , got there in the end , homer simpson moment
