Fairey Marine Pintle
Fairey Marine Pintle
Hi everyone,
I am looking to find a replacement for the keel-pintle on my Jollyboat.
I know these are pretty rare now.....but if anyone has one kicking around in their bits box, I would really like to get another one.
I have two, but they are both now pretty weak (especially after the Roadford bash).
I 'think' they are all the same and shared across: Jollyboat, Albacore, Swordfish, Int14, Falcon etc etc. I suspect they are also used on early Fireflys.
So if anybody has any....please scream....
otherwise I am going to have to put a modern transom hung one on.....which I would really like to avoid as it would mean I couldn't use original rudders.
talk later

Re: Fairey Marine Pintle
Hi Ed,
I'm sure these could be repaired by a decent brazier?
However I think I have one. I have been keeping it for my own just in case I hit a rock or a sandbank at excessive speed...Ill hunt it down later this week.
It even has Olympic provenance as it came off Mark Tait's boat. (Ex Brazil in the 1948 regatta...how topical is that!!?)
These pintles are often snapped if you use a Holt gudgeon on a fairey pintle. The Holt fitting has its hole set concentrically. so it fits when the rudder is straight but as the angle increases, so does the radius of the gudgeon and ultimately it snaps the pin off. It's easier to show in a drawing.
Tony Thresher on the firefly site also has a number of brass fittings removed from boats he refurbishes.

Re: Fairey Marine Pintle
I've tried to braze two of them and although it might be possible, it is not easy at all.
The issue is that the pin was put through the base and I think has a ridge on it. The end was then turned over and effectively riveted in place as if it was one big rivet. So you can't easily get it out. It is loose, but not out. As you can't get it out, it is impossible to properly clean, which make brazing pretty much impossible. Personally, if I could get it apart and clean it, I reckon you wouldn't need to braze it. Silver solder would most probably hold it in place??
With one of the ones I have, I will continue to try and get it out, but so far the action of trying to get it out has had the side effect of making it rigid again (pushing the rivet back into place), but I have no idea how long this will last before getting week and loose again.
I will post an image so non-Fairey owners know what I am talking about. They should be common as there were so many of them and they were pulled off as they had tendency to break.....on the other hand there don't seem to be many left now, hence finding it hard to find them.
cheers

Given he is in the USA, I thought he did a pretty good job with all that - an enjoyable read. Yes, a few errors about the general history, but not too far out.

Re: Fairey Marine Pintle
Looks exactly the same as some on Uffa Fox's 14s, presumably from the same supplier. So if any has scrapped a period 14....
