Wated old cotton sail

Post by chris »

I'm looking for a jib or genoa for a vintage Int 14. I have a great unused vintage main but no jib.
I know this is a long shot as most jibs rot along their wire luff and is a bit eccentric!
I'm currently using an old GP14 Dacron jib which is a reasonable fit so a gp 14 cotton genoa is a possibility ( I was tempted to buy the GP off ebay that sported cotton sails and ditch everything else but didn't dare!)

I would also think about making one from a main sail ( might need two) so redundant cotton mains off virtually any boat might get me there.

Any one got anything in the loft that the mice haven't eaten that they don't want?

Chris, my brother rang about a chap who had bought a youngish GP but the con man he bought it off had chucked in cotton sails not decent ones I will see if they are still about.

And any Merlin cotton sails will also find a good home if you can pass them on to Chris, as we have a couple of restorations under way.

Hugh thinks the gp ones are still available but I reckon the Peggie ones may be a better fit.

ps I still have Gently`s sails, they are now dry and will drop them over when I have a mo. Are you at Shearwater on Sunday?

Don't think I have any.....

but will try to look. It is possible I have some Jollyboat ones and an even lower chance that I have some from I14 K556......but think they went with the boat.

The main problem is that the original type of sailcloth is no longer available, there are some suitable substitutes but so far no sailmaker I know of has manage to source the right stuff in the right weight. Larger yacht size (weight) cloth is OK but that's why I'm after some old sails as a source.
