Just checking the Merlin's the mast over before getting the boat down to the dinghy park next week.
Aluminium Talurit type ferrules on stainless wire? Surely not...they have corroded badly. Pitted white and fluffy. I don't know if they are original but if they were they'd be 56 years old by now...
I whacked one hard with a chisel and the corrosion (or oxidisation) was not only external but when the thing came apart it was inside as well. Replacement is now in hand, £15 per wire plus vat is cheaper than a mast.
Or am I getting cautious in my old age? Would they actually have given way under strain?

While dead downwind from where you needed to go, with no safety boat in sight...

Aluminium ferrules are for galvanised wire. One should always use bronze ferrules on stainless wire. Someone used th wrong parts way back when - Result: rampant electrolytic corrosion and a failure waiting to happen.

Re: Standing rigging, Talurit etc etc
Blimey! But they lasted a long while, assuming they were original.
Well done for catching that one, I would not have thought to investigate it unless it was obvious whilst the mast was down.
Its a long mast to have around, over the side, etc.
Cheers

I'm not sure when stainless rigging wire first appeared but white fluffy ferrules were a bit of a giveaway! Much worse at the bottom of the rigging than top, which I suppose is logical.
Steve, you'll remember that the forestay on Desperation has the jib halyard block as part of it so if it breaks the jib won't be there to hold up mast.
I'd suggest that anyone with an ancient, hard to replace mast might spend 5 minutes giving their ferrules a scratch to make sure they are copper (if their wires are s/s of course).
Anyway, new ones in hand.
