Aye, says I, but me family say naarggghh, despite their luv of 'he ol' rum 'n' grog! So me offe' they some doubloons to quash any fear o' an embarrassment in nature. Sadly they say no, to my quest o' inner pirate proof.

So me say "avast ye, why yer hate o' ol' pirate speak?"

But they ignore, so me come 'ere instead.

Times 're 'ard for pirates like ye and me....

Why would pirates have talked any differently to any of their contemporaries? Most likely conversation on a pirate ship was a melange of different regional and national accents.

Perhaps they wouldn't have done, Jim.

But I was thinking more of (what I would perceive) a typical mythical pirate. More the sort you'd find in stories than in real life, in any era.

suspect it is the slanted view from popular film culture - I blame Robert Newton for starting it all.

From Wikipedia so it must be true!

Newton is best remembered for his portrayal of the feverish-eyed Long John Silver in the 1950 film adaptation of Treasure Island, the film that became the standard for screen portrayals of historical pirates. He would continue to portray Blackbeard in 1952 and Long John Silver again in the 1954 film of the same name, which spawned a miniseries in the mid 50s. Hailing from the West Country in south west England, his exaggeration of his West Country accent is credited with popularising the stereotypical "pirate voice".[2][3] Newton has become the "patron saint" of the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day.[4]

Well...that did not go well!

Said "Avast Behind" a few times and some of the ladies at the club got quite cross!

I really did not realise that there was such strong anti-pirate feelings nowadays
