help with boat ID

Post by Mungo »

Can anyone help identify this boat? 14 ft, located in Canada (in case it's a weird colonial boat).

thanks

Hi Mungo, any chance of a picture of the hull, so we can see the construction, please?

Of course, someone may simply say "its a so and so" and make that unnecessary!

Hi Rupert

Seller says 1960 14ft classic boat, doesn't know what it is, doesn't have a mainsail. Aluminum mast, wood boom. That's all I have

one other view

thanks

The stem surprised me! From the first two pics, I was expecting a scow!

She's very pretty, but not anything I recognise.....

What evidence is there to how she was rigged? Screw holes for jib fairleads, etc?

There's quite a lot of bow in front of the mast, so she could easily have carried two sails, and the cockpit looks roomy enough for two - if a little narrow...

If she turns out to be glued clinker I think a Merlin. Just look at the shape of the foredeck.

If the hog number is 400 ish then I'm wrong 'cos I guess she would be ribbed. If that hog number is 1400 ish then it would be glued and fit with the '60s.

I think the boxing in of the side and after decks might have been done later?

So my uneducated guess is a Chippendale built Proctor Mk something...she looks wider than my MK VIII

She has the look of a scorpion about her, two man, hiking, high foredeck what appears to be a straightish stem and an aft deck.

Not sure about the deck stepped mast,

Very early one if it is.

On the other hand she seems to have a Holt look.

Have you got any pics of the hull outside at all.

That last shot suggests hard chine. I agree there is a certain scorpion look to her, but not quite right, especially with the stern tank.

Almost certainly a Scorpion. All the early boats had aft tanks

Thanks everyone

from http://www.porthpeansc.co.uk/scorpion/scorpion.htm about scorpions

Image certainly the same boat

It's affordable, apparently complete except mainsail, but 3.5 hr drive to look at it... not sure I want to take it on as the jollyboat languishes in the garage. Love the curves on the aft tank

The Scorpion and the Hornet have very similar look, just two foot difference in the length.

100% a Scorpion.......the early ones had the beautiful dished after-deck/tank.....this one would have been registered around 1964/65 with the hull number of 401 if I'm reading it correctly from the pic. I've had a couple of these, one with aft tank, one without......my first ever race was as crew in a very early one with dished tank......fell in love with the shape then, very pretty boats.
