Any interest in a long distance river race as a CVRDA open?

Post by azimuth »

Hi All,

I've been trying to encourage a bit of interest in the cvrda at my club, this has resulted in the suggestion of inviting the cvrda to join us for a long distance river race we call the 'picnic race' so I'm posting to ask if this might be of interest?

My club is Severn SC which is on the River Avon on the Worcs/Glos border, for this event we race from our club to the next club downstream, which is Tewkesbury CSC (about 4.5miles away), we stop there for lunch and then race back. Usually TCSC do the same in reverse, so we pass them half way. To avoid too much chaos on a narrow start line we do a window start - start whenever you like in a given window, the time each boats starts is recorded and along with finish time is used to give the elapse time. The river is narrow but the banks are not that high so (by river standards) it is good for sailing although there are sections where it is particularly shifty and trying on light days (such as the two villages to go through and a motorway bridge to go under) - I have attached a pic to give an idea!

I mentioned the idea to some at Banbury last weekend and got a very positive response so am posting here to see what others think and also to see if the date of the event (bank hol mon 30th May) fits in with the CVRDA programme for next year?

Cheers
Keith

Sounds like good fun to me Keith. I don't think there's anything else on that weekend either.

Count me in. Lovely stretch of water. Some CVRDA members I know may be tempted to abandon ship when passing the Fleet Inn though.

Count us 'In' as long as the diary fits.
Chris and Lois in something 14ft long.

Did sail N12 672 at Tewksbury once. Main sheet failed on a gybe and we only just missed sailing up the bank!

I used to be a member there, and also did my SI course there. The coach made us sail a GP back upstream, into the wind, with the rudder removed. We hit a lot of banks but got back in time for lunch!

Lovely, lovely place to sail (nice people there, too). I will try to get Tom there with Spider, and perhaps my BM also.

Although the river is narrow, it is deep right up to the edges (mostly!!) - and some quite fast boats have raced at the two clubs including an international canoe and several Merlin Rockets. I use to sail a Hornet there, no 1313 'Double Trouble'.

Wow, thanks for all the responses, you all sound very keen so should be a goer!

Yes, camping, caravans, motorhomes no problem, also we have a well stocked bar (not quite as well stocked as the fleet inn but the prices are much better!).

I can confirm full width of the river is usable in nearly all places, I usually tack a foot or two from the reeds - foliage around the rudder is the most likely problem! Personally I've never witnessed an IC on the river - wow, sounds challenging, I'd like to see it done! But fast boats yes, we've had plenty of merlins and fireballs racing, we even had an Int Moth for a while and I manage OK in the Finn - technically we have a 16' limit but there is some flexibility in this.

Rupert - firefly sounds ideal!

Cheers

I love these kind of events.... Used to always do the Portishead to Pill and the Cleveden Channel race when I could.

Not sure if I will be able to get there, but if I can, I will.

cheers

Sounds like fun. I may have to beg borrow or steal a suitable river boat as the Hornet doesn't tack very easily.
