Flipper Scow
Continuing the theme from Minisails, I've just bought a Flipper Scow!
I know it's not strictly CVRDA fodder, but an interesting boat nevertheless...
Looks like it will be a fairly easy resto job... it's all there apart from the rudder stock and tiller....I've found a good pic on the internet of that, so a close replica will be easy to fabricate..
The hull has been painted, and knocked about a bit, but seems sound except for on spot on the underside where it's been sitting on a trolley, and is a bit soft... so lots of rubbing down and minor surface patching required... Anyone know the cost of a professional respray?
Some interesting points... The standing rigging is of approx 2mm single strand stainless wire.. never seen that before... The mast rotates, it has a pin in the bottom which sits in one of a row of holes in a stainless plate so rake is adjustable... the shrouds and forestay meet on a common fitting on the front of the mast, so I suspect they must be kept fairly slack or rotation could be tricky... The dagger board is 6mm aluminium, and only 100cm long, so only about 75cm sticks out the bottom... I suspect she will need to be sailed very flat!.. All the blocks I've looked at were made in Australia! Fine by me, coz I was too, but why? Surely cheaper to buy from Europe?

It really does look like a blown up Topper!
I'd be slightly nervous about 70s single wire shrouds.

I had single strand wire shrouds on my first boat, made from piano wire. That was an 11' Gunter rig though, I've not seen them on anything bigger.

Re: Flipper Scow
The hull has been painted on at least one occasion over the last 35 years or so... It looks horrible, and is oddly bumpy...
So I break out the 60 grit sandpaper, and attack.... one of the bumps I removed has revealed a little weep!
There's water in that there GRP!
My PC packed up the other day, fixed by replacing the PSU... The old one surrendered its fan, which is now circulating fresh air into the hull through a hatch... I can really feel the humid air emerging from the opposite one! I'll leave it running for a couple of weeks, and hopefully we'll have some sunshine to help with the drying out...

First coat of paint on the underside... I'm loving the colour, but so is every flying insect in the county!

Looking good!
Flying insects are a pain. At some point, though you have to admit defeat and that 6 leg marks are better than a smudge!

Very nearly finished:
Just a few ropes to sort out, and the toestraps...
