depends on the boat surely ? but it is typical to have some degree of 'slack taken up by shockcord' primarily to enable you to get your feet under repeatably and without having to look too much

Assuming Albacore. Comfortable . Its no use having toe straps that tight you cant get your feet under them or so slack you cant get back into the boat. When pulled out to the max the crew's end of ours just and only just touches the side tank and in my end they don't quite make the tank. I believe it is as important to be able to get back in in short order as it is to get out. But then I am quite old
