The decks are now on, gunwhale trim on and primer coat.
For the gunwhale trim I used Robbins 'solid hardwood lippings' in mahogany which are very close to the originals.

After what seems like months of varnishing I can now start the enjoyable bit, bolting and screwing things on. Then I need to put the mast up and sort out some rigging.

She looks excellent!

You have very 'modern' looking rudders. Are these a later addition?

Are your dagger board rectangular or do they have a curved or angled front corner?

Yes, rudders are a more modern shape, the originals would have been rounder with a straight leading edge. The dagger boards are rectangular, with only a little shaping, not very advanced at all. I have the original mainsail from number 5 but I think most of the gear came from a later cat which was destroyed, possibly number 468 looking at the marks from the old numbers on the sail.

Hmm regarding rudders.

I'll post some pics in the 419 thread of mine that have a curved leading edge in a very traditional way. I have two sets, both the same and they are visible in one of the old beach pictures. On other boats I have been known to turn rudder blades around to get a vertical leading edge which seems to reduce weather helm. Don't know if this would be any different on a cat...maybe I shouldn't fiddle until I've tried.

Found this amongst the paperwork. I've seen an article about dagger boards (more later) but no mention yet of rudder blade shape.

The rudders in that sketch look even more modern than mine and I note that has the lower foot jib as well. We just need Giles to chime in now, I suspect he has the more traditional rudders.

Bit more progress. The main isn't all the way up, the halyard jammed and needs some work, the gooseneck doesn't fit yet so that needs some work as well. And I need to fix the holes in the jib! A very different jib shape than the later plan.

If you weren't so far away you could nip round and borrow a jib and even an old main if needed.

I think I do have original rudders both from the wooden one 339 and the fibre glass one which is now mostly down the tip! I also have two different length dagger boards again one from 339 and one from FG.
I would love to take some photos and attach them but haven't the faintist idea how to, IT muppet!! Any instructions greatfully received.Or I could just ring Pat??
At the moment 339 hull etc is all ready. The mast from fibre glass needs new shrouds and a revised mast foot, which I may be able to do this weekend if I can get 339 out of the boat shed.
I have carried out sail repairs to the original main and jib, both a lovely soft terylene with timber battens. When I picked up the fibre glass one it had two very knackered mains which I need to look at sometime.
Photos to follow as and when I find out how to attach, I await further instruction.

I find the easiest way is to put the photos onto photo bucket and then copy the IMG code and paste it in.
