Paint over varnish.

Post by trebor »

What is required to paint a previously varnished surface, I want to paint floor, (varnished wooden boat) with a rubberised floor paint.

I hope this helps - it worked for me. Chemists about here may suggest something better. In any event I would avoid expensive thick and heavy non slip paints as they never seem to be both non slip and non damaging to your gear.

Find out what kind of varnish. If you don't know, treat a small inconspicuous area, with paint remover. If the varnish is 2 pack epoxy this will have almost no effect, otherwise it will soften the varnish.

In any case, if you need to refinish in paint or varnish, use the same chemistry as the old surface, and prepare the surface well (sand to a mat finish, to ensure the new surface will key to the old). If the old surface is not sound, remove it (scrape / sand to wood, and start again with a thinned coat that will soak in to the wood to key the finish). Build up thin layers progressively sanding with finer pair between.

If the varnish is basically sound, then - why paint it at all? You can make a very good varnish non slip surface using the sugar technique. Just use the same chemistry of varnish as determined as above. Onto the top layer of varnish, before it starts to skin (i.e. it is still wet, not tacky) sprinkle a thin layer of sugar. When the varnish is dry, you can wash this off, and it leaves a nice non slip effect in the varnish (or paint) which is less rough on your gear / knees.

Thanks for info.
First time I have understood this sugar thing, read it loads of times, always wondered how hard wearing sugar is ?
You saying 'wash' enlightened me, sugar dissolves and leaves holes

Use hottish water to wash it, so it dissolves, otherwise it is a pig to remove the sugar.

Boat is old Mirror, just been professionally painted and varnished, rigging converted to centre main, all controls beefed up and fed to helm, owner then decided he didn't like it, only been on water twice, going for a song, floor very slippy, surprised that boatyard sent it out like that.
I was looking for my first wooden boat amongst abandoned boats at my club, favourite was a partially restored abandoned Miracle, this Mirror so cheap it rapidly became my favourite, just got to have a test sail.

They appear to inflict very little damage to my corduroys...
