Dinghies, raters and canoes in Hope's edition of Dixon Kemp.

Post by Aquarius »

Dixon Kemp's Manual of Yacht and Boat Sailing and Architecture was the Bible of Victorian yacht and boat design. The eleventh edition was edited by Malden Heckstall Smith, who wrote about sailing, and Linton Hope, who wrote about design and drew the plates.

I only have the "plates" volume and it is terminally disintegrating.

But they certainly make you think

(I don't know why they are not right way up - I am new to this photo hosting outfit)

The 9th Edition is available on the Internet Archive - https://archive.org/details/manualofyachtboa00kemp

Several companies sell "reprints" - but I'd imagine they are of this scan, the plates have not all been scanned.

I hope you are going to keep your volume intact, the individual plates do come up for sale on eBay.

Mmm, there is no such thing as a terminally disintegrating volume, the experienced restorers can do amazing stuff...

I only have the 8th edition, revised by John Leather. Are they very different?

Just realised that is the manual of yacht and boat sailing. Has canoe stuff in it.

They are somewhat different as far as the plates are concerned; Linton Hope unsurprisingly included a good many of his own designs and he was knowledgeable about raters and canoes and such, so included more of them. I had the John Leather reprint but donated it to Flensburg Museumharbour. But it's basically the same book.
