First attempt at a patch - not well aligned and not much of a colour match...

Re: Thank you, Ed, Rupert and Mungo (Fairey Marine Hull Repa
We got the Firefly upside down in the shed and stripped the varnish and put in a couple of small patches following the excellent advice given and are now working on the area just ahead of the transom...
All three veneers have "gone" as had the aft section of the keel. Having taken that off we could remove the rotten veneers at which point we found that the hog was also soft at the aft end, but luckily the transom and the part of of the hog nearer the c/b case are fine, so the order of proceedings would seem to be - scarph on a new aft section of hog, replace the inner veneers, then middle, then outer.
The Scene of the Crime, before cutting back the middle veneers to sound wood:
The boat had been owned by a very careful owner who kept her beautifully varnished but felt that he was not up to hull repairs, so he had put her in the hands of his local boatyard, whose idea of a repair was fillets of epoxy.. and at this point I have to own up to having sailed the old girl for some years in the knowledge that "there's a bit of a leak..." Only now have I taken action...
"So far so good" but peering into the centreboard case revealed that the inner sides of the case have delaminated...
I think that the thing to do is to complete the repairs to the aft section before touching the centreboard case, for fear of the boat losing shape.
Grateful for confirmation from the experts...

I did a very similar repair to my Finn, also a Fairey boat, only difference is that the Finn doesn't have a keel. It's somewhere previously in this section.
