Proctor Centenary 2018
Re: Proctor Centenary 2018
Although production may well have been 2001/2, that is already a decade after Ian died whilst with the Wayfarers at Hayling.
I'll contact the family and see if the plans have a date on them. I'm working closely with the family on other aspects of the centenary so hopefully can resolve thins.
Neil - Ed...... I've got a couple of dates for IC designs - do you know how many different Marques of canoe designs Ian produced?

I doubt it is...trebor wrote:Would this be the last new Scow design by anyone?
Certainly outside of dinghies there's the Quant 23, a foiling keelboat scow... and some Mini Transat boats have been scows too....

Hmmmmm - that's an interesting one and a thought that has got me pondering.
Those of you with well working memories may recall the article that I did for Dinghy Mag on 'Skiffs v Scows' (I ought to have the .pdfs somewhere) but I don't think the Spectrum featured in that. Plenty of other more modern takes on the scow hull form did surface.
Has there been a new scow shaped dinghy since Spectrum - not in the UK, but maybe out abroad.

I'd be interested to know what the definition of 'scow' actually is...from little things scooting around the South Coast through Cat boats to big flat Aussie devices that look a little scary?

Sold the 'Something bigger and plastic', it never got used.

I always assumed same shape as Topper, Minissail, Fireball, Swallow etc, didn't think their was any ambiguity.
Re: Proctor Centenary 2018
Robert,
Au Contraire - not all scows are scows! I'd have to dig out the article I did on them, when I looked at how the way of naming a blunt bowed boat a scow came about (IIRC it comes from the Dutch) but then you can have a boat like a Lymington Scow (the original of the genre) which is a different shape and much more dinghy like.
As with so many things in the dinghy heritage, not all is as it might otherwise seem.

Ok, have found the article and will reduce it and try to post it up on here.
BUT - back to Proctor - we've yet more designs....
Leprecaun
Rolinx
Swinger 20
Now if anyone can thrown ANY light on these I'd be very grateful - one of these came as a surprise to me too.

Meant to ask - are you going to try and find a Seamew and Seagull as well?

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018
Rupert,
No - but will make plenty of reference out to them. I hadn't fully appreciated just how big a part Proctor played in the post war expansion in small keelboats - which then continued on through boats such as the Pirate and Eclipse. It is a part of the Proctor story, though thankfully not one that will involve me overly much as the range of his keelboats is quite extensive.

Seagull, hmmm heard something about one of these recently.
No surprise some of these boats didn't make it, what strange names.
Leprechaun ?
Rolinx ?
and a Swinger 20 ?
What do you sail ? oh a Rolinx.

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018
Rolinx seems to have been the plastic injection moulding company that originally made the Topper.... presumably the boat of that name was a Topper sequel!

Robert,
Au contraire - the Seagull and Seamew both sold well.........as did his later cruisers

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018
I don't mean Seagull and Seamew (well Seamew a bit odd), someone recently told me they had acquired a Seagull.
I meant the other three.
I meant the other three.
Re: Proctor Centenary 2018
Or do the names only sound odd because we aren't used to them? After all, Osprey sounds fine, but maybe Peregrine sounds a little strange? Another fine example of a Proctor keelboat, which seems well ahead of its time, looking at the current sports boat scene.

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018
Did he design any boats jointly? And were any of them famous designers?
