Gull get together at Bowmoor SC

Post by Alan P. »

Hello one and all.

Not a CVRDA event but one that may well appeal to those of you lucky enough to have a Gull dinghy. This is not a regular event but one that has been organised to see how things go as there are still many of these little boats being sailed ,the forum is quite active, a Gull blog and there is now a newsletter.

www.gulldinghy.proboards.com You will have to register on the first visit and log in but it is very simple and painless.

I would love to attend myself but the distance and ferries involved do not make it practical.

Following details copied from the Jan newsletter.........

12/13 May 2018 Cotswolds get together

For those interested in attending the Gull meet at Bowmoor in May, here is some additional information.

Anyone intending to arrive on the Friday, the club will be open for access from around 4pm, so please do not arrive earlier as you will not be able to get in.

There is a large grass area for those wishing to pitch a tent. Campervans and caravans can park up in the large car parking area. Please note that there is no facility for electric hookup, but there is a fridge which can be used along with kettle and microwave oven in the clubhouse which I will have the key for.

There are a number of good quality hotels and B&B’s in nearby Lechlade which is only a 5 min drive from the SC.

Again, for those staying over at the club, there is a wide choice of good takeaway food outlets at nearby Lechlade. I was also thinking it might be nice to book a table at ‘The Riverside’ bar and restaurant on the Saturday evening if there was sufficient interest? But more about that later.

For those not sailing, there are some lovely walks to be had direct from the Club. It would be great if someone who intends doing some walking would be prepared to lead any others who may be interested in coming along?

An outline itinerary for the weekend which will remain entirely flexible:-

Saturday
09.30 Welcome and introductions
09.45 Boats rigged and a discussion on set up and modifications led by Chris Abela
11.00 Out on the water session 1 – basic boat speed, and capsize drill
13.00 lunch followed by an Introduction to racing, the basics, led by Chris Abela
14.00 Out on the water session 2 – race starts, and short races (not serious!)
15.30 Discussion – The future of the Gull. Do we want/need a CA / Class Rules – How do we proceed?

Sunday
Option – join in with club racing with our own start. There will be 3 races starting at 11.30, 13.30 and 15.00, Or cruising in company of others outside the race area.

The club will provide safety boat cover whilst we are afloat.

There should be a Mk6 demonstrator available for people to try out during the weekend courtesy of Hartley Boats. I will also have a trial set of sails with me which involve a larger Genoa and a loose footed mainsail.

The club has agreed to operate a galley service for Saturday lunchtime, so there will be hot food choices. The galley will also be open on the Sunday.

Costs
The costs which have been agreed with the club will be as follows:-
£10 per day to include helm and crew (covers sat night camping)
£5 additional for those camping on site Friday night
£5 additional for those camping on site Sunday night

If your considering coming along, please don't feel there is any obligation to join in with any aspect of the weekend that doesn't appeal. The bottom line has to be, come and enjoy and take from the experience whatever you will!

Alan P,

Great to see this - the Gull is a sweet little boat. You may wish to feed back to those involved with the event, that the Gull will very much be a part of the Proctor themed events this year - there may also be some interesting new 'factoids' about the design.

The boat will be at the Dinghy Show in the guise of 'Jolly Roger' aka Gull Number 1 - with this boat also being at the Bosham event (see elsewhere on here for details.

Hope to see some Gulls and Gull sailors this year

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

The Bowmoor club member and fixer could not attend due to personal commitments that cropped up at the last min. As nobody else wanted to take up the baton and there were only a small number of people and boats expected, it was decided to cancel. Great shame.
