:?:Minor category for Peggies [:(!]- b****y cheek :x-
Which boat tends to be at or very near the front of most cvrda races ?
I rest my case!
David R

PS.
Sailed the Peggie on Boxing Day at Oxford SC in the Pursuit race managed 6th out of 20 odd boats, beat the Lasers which was enjoyable but the RS 400's, Contender & Int 14 screamed past just before the end.
But we were definitely the oldest boat on the water - and it was better than being at home

Just found out one of GPS has a "store fastest speed function". Will play with it on the canoe once I get a liner for my drysuit.

Talking about over canvassing for a speedrun. I recently did a boat swap day on the solent with some Flying Ditchman lads. They enjoyed the sliding seat so much there was talk of a one off twin plank FD with masthead spinaker. If it ever happens I will let you know. Now that would be fast.

And in the spirit of windsurfer speed runs on the speed canals in France, they should sail it at Chippenham!

Re: measuring distance over water....

maybe I am being stupid, but surely this is easy enough with GPS.

You have two logged postions....and each of them is 1/4 of a mile appart.

Can you do this Neil....or am I really being stupid?

You would want to do it on a piece of non-tidal water for obvious reasons.

Oh....the FDs have been talking about making a FDMk11 for ages....I have also heard of talk of racks....twin wire....assymetric kite....etc etc. I agree it would be interesting to see what they come up with.

Who knows maybe by then I would of built my Mk11 Jollyboat.

cheers

Seeing Rogers reference to a Flying Ditchman, make me wonder if this is a suitable Chippenham boat

2 positions is fine - just stick a GPS on each spot for about 20 mins to average out the position.

The problem will be that you are commited to a limited direction (well, 2 directions) so if the wind shifts the optimum course could be lost, that's why Weymouth has a choice of courses.

The tricky bit will be the time measurement - coordinating start and stop. If it's going to be self delcared then it might be worth setting up a couple of transits, again this will limit the choice of course. I am assuming that this could be done at Roadford so we could have a play to see what works.

There is a thread on the Y&Y forum which discusses this. Might be worth a look. I seem to remember it involved simply taking a GPS out and recording high speeds, but I could be wrong!
BTW, any club want the Frostbite event...? And any helpers for Roadford?!

I am sure that we will be able to find some helpers from Roadford to assist with the timing and computer.

GPS is prone to the occassional glitch so you can't altogether trust single top speeds. If you've got one that records the track so you can download the results thats best.
