Mast
If anyone has a mast that fits a Jolly Boat (Flying 15) please let me know.
My club held its first boat age handicap race yesterday and fresh from winning the novice racing the previous day felt we had a chance. However, the jib halyard/wire came out of the mast slot just below the sail head about 2/3rds of the way up which took a very frustrating hour to free up. I know an overhaul is an option but it is old and heavy and newer lighter version would be good.

Hi,
Ed can probably confirm, but I think the FD uses the same mast, or as near as you would not notice, to the Jollyboat. If that is the case go to the FD website and give Tony Lyall a call, his number is listed, and he should be able to point you in the right direction. There are some old Needlespars around which should be available quite cheaply.

I think FD mast is 'legal' by 'new' rules brought out in 1971 just before class collapsed, would have to check for exact measurements
But it would be a bit too long by original rules.
I am not sure exactly if the hounds are in the right place. I rather suspect they are not quite right.....but certainly worth trying. You can always cut down a bit if necessary.
I have a needlespar in my boat. Its fine....but damn heavy and a little bendy. Original Jollyboat masts were Proctor F s and very stiff indeed.
Reckon a FD mast may well work well.
I know that FF masts work well as the hounds all end up in pretty much the right place. The added depth of the hull (over the Jollyboat) brings up the boom height by a pleasant 6 ins or so. You might need to play a bit with the FD as the boom height is so much higher originally.
But I would go for it.
cheers

Thank you, I have a lead on one so will follow up.
The mast has been sold so the search goes on.

I have two incomplete firball masts and know of a mast that was last used on a pegasus - let me know if you would like measurements to be taken.

Firball and Peggie too small.
Never found an I14 mast long enough either....
Ospreys are too short....as I think are 505s.
Remember the Jollyboat has a full 21ft Luff.
FFs work due to having big depth below deck. FDs may well also as they certainly have 21ft or longer luff.
will check all this later, but no time now
cheers

Just heard from allspars that a new FF mast is £766 plus delivery or a FD mast (Only Carbon) is £1892. Secondhand it is then!

Well if you are buying new.......you might as well ask for a Jollyboat mast.
Selden could certainly give you a quote, maybe even to the old Proctor F standard. They made up a mast for J332 not that long ago - I even have the quote some where.
But it will certainly be expensive.....I would go for a second hand mast myself!!!
cheers

Just a thought - could make long mast by sleeving two shorter ones together? This is after all how 29er and 49er masts are made now (top in carbon bottom in ally). The joint would want to be above the hounds.. Has anyone attempted this?

Very original of course......Fairey used wooden top aly masts in Firefly, Swordfish and others before they worked out how to taper the ali masts. Never seen a Jollyboat with one of those masts though. J3 had a beautiful (still has - just don't use it) spruce mast with a wall thickness around 1/4in in some places. It's lighter than my needlespar, although admit this does not say much!
No, I reckon putting a two-part mast together would be too much damn effort. I would stick to finding a 2nd hand mast.
cheers
