when I was a paid hand on Velsheda many years ago we were transferring some gear from a rib, one of the guys had a huge generator battery in his hands, slipped and went over the side still holding it. He tried to tread water, for about 0.1 of a second and sank like a stone.
He appeared about 15 seconds later having gone down a long way.

Re: How many of these have you seen for real?
The boat running up the beach reminded me of the chokka (calamari/squid) boats landing in South Africa, running at speed through the surf and as far up the beach as possible. Health and safety is non-existant so you keep to the lifeguarded areas to surf and bodyboard and don't walk on the landing beaches.
Re: How many of these have you seen for real?
There used to be an instructor down at Rock, who would sail their Lasers in 'mucho' wind.
He had a trick I liked.....he would sail straight at the beach and just as he left the water would allow the laser to capsize so that it ran up the beach on its rail, he would then step off and leave the boat out of the water, on its side with the sail in the lee of the hull.
Very slick.....as long as it isn't your own boat!

The "worked on Velsheda" comment fits in rather nicely with Ed's childhood summer holiday talk. Am I the only one who doesn't have a secret exotic past life hiding somewhere?!

It wasn't that glamourous - mostly multiple trips around the Island on a diet of leftover smoked salmon and Pimms and 50 quid a week.
The Swan circuit was a lot more fun

All you do is sit around all day stripping the wenches that are needed for the week-end...

Think you'll find the wenches were in the owner's domainMichael Brigg wrote:

Re: How many of these have you seen for real?
Are we talking winches or wenches? A world of difference!!
Re: How many of these have you seen for real?
I think we can assume that the wenches are going to be heading towards those with the large bulge in their pockets that's most notoriously attractive to women. So owners territory. The crew, on the other hand, gets to play with the winches.Garry R wrote:Are we talking winches or wenches? A world of difference!!
