Shearwater IMPORTANT

Post by chris »

This morning I received this email from our commoder at Shearwater. At the moment we will go ahead but watch this space if we have to cancel at the last minute.

Dear Members,

We have been informed by the Environment Agency that they have detected traces of Microcystis a blue-green algae which is potentially toxic but currently below a threshold for further official action but which they will continue to monitor.

We were advised to contact the Public Protection Team at Wiltshire Council for advice. After discussions between these two organisations they have said the levels are currently low but if collections of scum type material were found on the water or waters edge these should be noted and avoided.

The officers advice given the current low levels was not to cancel if we had an event but to advise Members, and take sensible precautions i.e. not swim or ingest, ensure cuts are covered (waterproof plasters) and suggest anyone with a low immune system avoid using the water at this time.

We would also suggest that particular attention is taken to hand washing coming in off the water and in the event of capsize ensure they shower.

As an added precaution we would advise that those aged under 14 years should not sail at this time.

For your information we attach an information leaflet produced by the RYA.

Should you wish to discuss any of the above further then please do let me know.

In the meantime we will continue to monitor the situation.

This is the RYA leaflet Chris mentions.

Launching is generally done via the jetty anyway so there is no need to enter the water!
Showering is available too.

Although the algae has increased a little we are still allowed to sail.

Winds are forecast to be light so capsizing is unlikely and we're also expecting some rain on Saturday which will dilute things a bit.

Hi Chris, we have just been informed of something called swimmers rash, apparently caused by microscopic snails, anyone come across this one yet? no algae yet though.

Not heard of that at Shearwater but swimming is not something many would want to do here.

More risk of being struck by lightning today I think.

We have had the blue/green algae before but don't remember anyone becoming ill.

Now Blue Peter will more water come through the bottom than filling the boat from above :D
