Graham Cockle auctions

Post by PeterV »

So a number of the Thornhill boats have reappeared on this auction site, anyone know the story behind this?

Fairey Finn K88 looks good, as does the 11+ and the 14s.

They are also selling off the containers and buildings that formed the Cardiff World of Boats establishment “due to relocation”. A quantity of larch and teak is also included. The larch was left over from the restoration of the very large vessel Elena in the main workshop area in Cardiff. I think the fourteen ‘Lightning’ was one of the Cardiff boats, maybe it was unsold at the first auction. I don’t know just what the set up was but some of the machinery from the workshop was in the first auction I think. Perhaps it was one of the ones that ownership had not been confirmed.

So if you want a fully set up cafe and the building now is your chance!

I have just received this:

Graham Cockle <graham@gc-c.co.uk>
12:41 (52 minutes ago)
to

Thanks to the generosity of John ( I am keeping his surname secret) We have now received the original scale drawing and instruction manual for the Kit-boat 11 Plus sailing dinghy. Although Dobson of Derby built the Knotty Nuf, John kept all original documentation, this is a real find for lovers of wooden sailing dinghies. There is just six day’s to the end of the auction my client has asked me to tell all would be buyers that all bids will be considered.
regards

No bids et ...and no, another would be just plain greedy.

Anyone else bid on anything? I'm a little confused that every item has

AUCTION ENDED
Auction failed to meet the reserve!
You can still make us an offer or buy now.

Either nothing has sold, or I own a Fairey Finn

Have to wait and see if there really is a reserve that’s not been met, seems to be some confusion with this auction as nothing met reserve, despite one of the boats going for double what it was advertised for on a boats for sale website. Hoping it’s a glitch in the auction website.

It’s been a few years since I had a Finn, I think this will be my 5th.

I think only a couple of things didn’t sell. The fourteen went for 550 I think.
The bids disappear d as soon as they timed out of the auction
Well done Neil.

Well, spoke to the auctioneer today - none of the boats went as they had reserves set. They are looking for significantly more for the Finn than my top bid.

I had a feeling that might be the case. I'm sorry Neil as £50 is about what it's worth, since as usual the costs of getting it sailing will be more than its worth once it is sorted.

I know of a wooden Fairy Finn that is in need of some TLC here in Gosport.
I can take a good look at it in the next day or so and let you have photos, find its number etc.
(It also has the original mast.)
I believe it needs attention to it's decks.

I'll PM you my email if you're interested.

It sounds as if the auction had some high hopes of what people are prepared to pay for old dinghies, whatever their pedigree. The ‘value’ always comes down to ‘whatever someone is prepared to pay’ in reality. Or to be more precise in an auction it is determined by whatever the second bidder decides to stop at.

In the EISCA auction the Finn sold for £150 (so £207ish probably after VAT, buyers premium etc), according to the then auctioneers website. Saw it briefly in a shed in Eyemouth.
