Organised sailing at Brigham dates back to the mid 19th century and the Brigham Sailing Club was founded in 1928. Although the Brigham Scow is not a specific design of boat, they are usually around 16 feet (4.9 m) long and 5 feet 6 inches (1.7 m) wide and just some 18 inches (45 cm) from deck to the flat hull bottom. There is a pivoting centreboard about 4 feet (1.2 m) deep and 2 feet (60 cm) wide, usually made from 1/8 steel plate. The mast is generally around 20 foot high carrying a balanced lug sail of 175 to 225 square feet (16.3 sq.m to 21 sq.m). |
