Rudder profile

I used to race (J35 Samantha ) in the late 60 s early 70s and we were using the new profile rudder blade which had a straight ( horizontal) base but still had the swept back leading edge . It was far superior to the old blob type rudder.

There is no doubt that you are absolutely right. I am sure that rudder was much better than the old spoon. I am afraid that many boats now have even given up on that shape and have now gone over to a more modern dagger type shape…..typically like that used on Ospreys or even 505s.

For myself, I have a straight dagger, muck like a Firefly. It is certainly much better, although I do worry about catching weeds and the like sometimes.

By the way, I think that Samantha is still sailing, although I forget where. Sula who I know was also at your club is waiting for a new owner to finish the re-build that was started a while ago by the last owner. I have been looking after her for a while, but must now find a new home for her.
