The 2007 Travellers series has now completed and both overall results and fleet results are available. The 2008 events list is now well filled with all the favourite venues plus the National Rally at Netley and new events at Starcross S.C. in Devon, Thames S.C. in South West London and Corus S.C. in South Wales. Please book the dates in your diaries. Note that the Travellers' Series 2008 year will end with the Netley Nationals and, as voted at the AGM, will in future run from the end of one Nationals to the next Nationals. David Chivers, one of our Brightlingsea members has written an excellent book on Austin 'Clarence' Farrar. Fuller review to follow but this is recommended reading! Excel London Boat Show The CVRDA was represented for the first time at the Excel London Boat Show. Dinghies were given outdoor stand space for the final weekend and Shoestring, a very original Hornet, was the main attraction of the stands, so much so that the Moth stand moved to be next to us to bask in the attention! Everyone wanted to touch the wood and stroke the varnish and many people asked if it was real wood! The two Pegasus of Keith & David Rollinson and John & Matthew Andrews competed in the Battle of the Classes and despite the gusty conditions made a good showing. Special thanks to the sailors for their contribution. Chris Barlow receives RYA Community Award Chris Barlow has received an RYA Community Award (Outstanding Contribution Category) for his contibution to Shearwater Sailing Club, Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association and Merlin Rocket Vintage wing. Chris's restoration projects have led to the revival of many a vintage dinghy destined for the chain saw and bonfire, and the quality of his work is such that he has become the leading restorer in the Classic Vintage Racing Dinghy Association and the benchmark to which we all aspire - and I might add we generally fall short of his immaculate standards. He has an affinity with his craft that few of us attain. Allied to his skills in the workshop he is free with his advice and tips while maintaining a quiet modesty to the point of being dismissive of his own talents. In addition to his restoration work Chris believes that these old boats going back to the 1940s, should not just become museum pieces but should be sailed and enjoyed and raced (perhaps not quite so hard as they had been in their youth!) and he is also a successful sailor of these craft on his home water and at venues through the country.
Boat Jumbles are an excellent place to find new and used fittings and kit at reasonable prices. Some forthcoming events are listed here. Pete Vinton has written an excellent article on the classic Finn especially for the cvrda. Read and learn!
I was promised some other images....If you have any that you could share, please do email or post to Pat
