Wraysbury Lake Sailing Club will host a special event to celebrate Jack Holt’s centenary on the weekend of 7th, 8th July 2012.
Wraysbury Lake S.C. was founded by Jack Holt and he sailed there with his wife. The story goes that she was not keen to crew the Merlin with him at Ranalagh and Wraysbury offered quieter sailing. He designed the Enterprise specifically for him and his wife to enjoy sailing there.

We will require pre-registration and boats that have not registered may not be able to attend. Boats entered will be asked for an entry fee of £15 for a single hander or £25 for a double hander to confirm their entry into this event. So enter now by completing THIS FORM!

We will need to limit the number of boats to under fifty and it is hoped to represent all of the dinghies that Holt designed or built. (see below for list). Some examples may be difficult or impossible to locate but we want to try. We would like to have a spread from the earliest examples from a class to a modern version to show the development of his work. For instance Enterprises no 1 and 2 exist and the owners have expressed interest in this event. An up to date version would make an interesting contrast. With development classes like the National 12s his involvement was a little more limited and only a few Holt 12s exist still (possibly as few as one or two). He was the original designer for the Merlins and dominated the fleet till Proctor became the leading name. So do we include an up to date one or keep to the many Holt designs?

The two day event will include points races, maybe a pursuit, concours and display of boats and hopefully photo/information display etc. There is a nice camping area on site etc. Please help to make this a special event to celebrate someone who made such a contribution to the dinghy sailing world.

Holt Boats:
Cadet, diamond keelboat, enterprise, GP14, Heron, Hornet, Int canoe, Int 14, Jacksnipe, lazy E, Merlin, Miracle, Mirror, Mirror 16, National 12, North Norfolk16, Pacer (formally Puffin), Rambler, Solo Streaker, Vagabond.

Our thanks to Nigel and all at Baltic Wharf for a welcoming if somewhat windless day. The light breeze persisted for the head of the harbour race – a pleasant tour of the western part of Brunel’s historic docks – but dropped somewhat for the afternoon race. Several visitors joined the club members for the day which was won by the British Moth of Roger Witts and Nigel Osborne’s local knowledge taking his Albacore to second place.

The Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association was blessed wih georgeous weather and gentle winds at their second regatta of the season on the Avon river with the Bristol Avon Sailing Club on the 27/28 July.

17 boats took part, 10 local and 7 visitors. Boats varied from the 1948 International 14 of Andrew Thornhill, through four beautiful Fireflies, to a 1960′s Finn. The wind on both days was fickle and rather feeble allowing the experienced river sailors the opportunity to excel in the ch allenging conditions.

Making the best of the gently winds with a clean sheet of first places was Rupert Whelan sailing single handed in Saskia – Firefly F2324, returning to BASC after a few years lake sailing and showing that the time away from the river had done nothing to slow him down. Second place was taken by the local experts, Bob Corefield and Christine Higham in Mercury 37 and third was Ed Bremner in Firefly F2942 from Baltic Wharf Sailing Club.

Results:

Overall – 1st, Rupert Whelan – Firefly, 2nd, B,Corefield & C,Higham – Mercury, 3rd, Ed Bremner – Firefly.

Persuit – 1st, Rupert Whelan – Firefly, 2nd, Andrew Thornhill – Int 14, 3rd, B,Corefield & C,Higham – Mercury,

For some great images provided by Kathryn Whelan go here

Again we were blessed with just the best weather possible for the Bristol based cvrda event. Two days of sun with gentle, but blessedly steady winds allowed the BWSC race officers to run a range of racing, fun events and cruising over the weekend.

This was the third year that BWSC had run a cvrda event alongside their annual club regatta and this year the cvrda providing an especially good turn out of about 15 boats to get the event going with a swing.

The weekend started off with an early morning cruise up the Avon, leaving Shirehampton at 8.15am and sailing with the last of the tide up the Avon Gorge and under Clifton Suspension Bridge arriving at the lock in time to sail through into Cumberland Basin. The wind was un-typically on the boats nose for the whole trip providing a fun, if rather slow beat up to Bristol. The boats only just made it through the lock against the turned tide…..and a large sigh of relief was given as everyone was through into Cumberland Basin.

Saturday afternoon provided some close, in rather low wind, racing back on the Bristol Harbour.

Sunday morning started with a fun race. After crossing a start line laid off the Cottage Pub, all boats had a short beat up to a buoy off Underfall Yard before a long run down the whole length of the harbour to the Arnolfini (local hostelry) at other end of harbour. At the Arnolfini, they had to moor up and send crew to buy an ice-cream before beating back to Baltic Wharf for the finish.

Sunday afternoon saw two more races in Baltic Wharf Basin, run back to back. There was still rather low winds….but it was enough to keep everyone moving and provided some close racing.

Results:

Yes…..there were some…..<G>….but to be honest they have largely been lost in the mists of time!

I know that races were won by John Gardiner (Graduate 307) and Chris Barlow (Merlin Rocket 507)……and that Andrew Thornhill was very fast on Saturday in his Firefly, faster still on Sunday in his beautiful Int 14 but only being rewarded by a 2nd once the handicap had been established (damn fast – those 14s).

In the end it was between John Gardiner (and Lyn) in their Graduate and Chris Barlow in Merlin Rocket 507. When all the points were added up it came out as a draw and had to be split by the ‘best discard’ method ……Who had it?

John Gardiner……just……so well done!

But the best news for the cvrda was that John agreed to run nest year’s cvrda event on the river Avon at Saltford with his home club Bristol Avon Sailing Club. Great Stuff!

The 2nd annual cvrda rally took place, as last year, at Roadford lake in Devon. Once again the August bank holiday weekend was blessed with fine weather and wind.

This event continues to grow in popularity with numbers increasing over the 1st year.

Boats from many classes took part with examples from throughout the history of these same classes. Firefly’s, Merlin Rockets, National 12′s, Jollyboats, Plymouth Dolphins……….all competed for the series title as well as the concourse d’elegance.

Saturday was the fun race, a treasure hunt, maths and anagram test finishing with a knot test made for a lively but very lighthearted start to the event.

The Pegasus and Mercury classes both held their national championships at this years event. For those and the others there was some lively, noisy but once again friendly racing. 20 or so boats at the 1st mark in near drifting conditions IS fun!

The ‘party in the barn’ on the Sunday night was a resounding success resulting in quite a few thick heads the next day.

Results

mmmmmmm, to be honest, I can’t remember much and if I get time I will dig through the boxes of cvrda stuff and find them out and put them up here, If anyone is really bothered……give me a call.

I seem to remember it was something like this:

Classic Wing 1st Pegasus 48 (Citrine) – Andy Hayes
Vintage Wing 1st Tideway (Blossom) – Pat Thompson
Old Wing 1st Osprey 959 (Shape) – Jeff Faulkner
Overall Winner Osprey 959 (Shape) – Jeff Faulkner
1st Plastic Boat Wayfarer 4004 – Roger Ford

The Inaugural Rally of the Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association (CVRDA) was held in glorious conditions on Roadford Lake over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The Association, formed in 1998, was the initiative of Ed Bremner to encourage racing and sailing of dinghies designed prior to 1965. His initiative was rewarded by an entry of 36 dinghies. The fleet included a stunning copper-nailed Tideway (whose crew included a Jack Russell!), three sturdy Plymouth Dolphins, an original 1946 Merlin (No 6), and J3, one of the earliest Jollyboat class, designed by Uffa Fox as the fastest reaching mono-hull in the 50′s and early 60′s.

The Saturday afternoon Concours d’Elegance was an impressive sight .The 1948 Olympic single hander Firefly showing deft touches of formation sailing as the five entries ‘ swarmed ‘among the rest of the ‘sail- pass’. The award for best looking dinghy, at such events, tends to be decided by a panel of stern judges, with clipboards, noting fine detail. For this occasion Ed decided all the attending crews should be the judges. Issued with coloured voting ribbons and after considerable deliberation, the ‘Best Looking Boat on the Water’ was a tie between the Plymouth Dolphin, ‘ Valkyrie’ and ‘ Maladicta’, a Jollyboat. The latter conceded immediately to Mark Jones’ Valkyrie in acknowledgement of her impressive crew, his five-year-old daughter, who had trapezed expertly throughout the whole sail -pass!

Sunday and Monday were race days with the light breeze on Sunday favouring the Firefly class and the slightly stronger winds on Monday favouring the Osprey and Jollyboat classes.

The Rally was the opportunity for Pegasus, a 1958 Uffa Fox design, to hold their Nationals. Five dinghies fought a close series to be won ultimately by Andy Hayes and Alison McGregor from Starcross sailing club P48.

The remainder of the dinghies had a great time competing in accordance with the 1963 PY ratings. The Rally winner was Rupert and Katherine Whelan in Firefly 2324. The fastest dinghy over-all was James Platts and Michelle Adderley in Osprey 589.

Following the success of the inaugural rally ,the association looks forward to an expanding event, with more boats on the water next year, at Roadford Lake .

Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association National Rally 2011

Whitefriars Sailing Club provided an idyllic Cotswold backdrop to the 2011 cvrda Nationals over the August Bank Holiday. Competitors started arriving on the Friday, to set up camp, screw vital pieces to their boats, and retire to a nearby pub for supper and a pint.

Saturday dawned bright, sunny and windy, perfect for a day of blasting up and down the lake, taking part in an on the water treasure hunt and posing for the camera in an hour-long sail past. The 30 boats had a wonderful time planing down towards Karen Collyer and her camera. One the beer fuelled AGM was over, it was time for a Barbecue.

On Sunday we started the almost serious business of racing. With the day’s racing also being part of the Vintage Merlin Rocket traveller series, they were the best represented class, with 6 boats, including a pre-amalgamation Rocket. Minisails were next, with 4 helms using 6 boats between them as the weekend went on! Perhaps the most unusual boat, allowed to sail by special dispensation, was a modern version of a 19th century design; a gaff rigged Cornish Cove Boat.

On the water in the strong, gusty wind, the Merlins and an Albacore had a titanic battle for line honours, with MR1066 coming out on top more than once, but they were unable to escape the attentions of International Moth 2883, British Moth 790 and Minisail 3446, who vied each race for the handicap win.

Much Pizza was consumed that evening to help with the recovery process.

Monday morning’s races, held in lighter winds, saw the “slow” boats mixing it up with the fast end of the fleet as the wind shifted seemingly at random. The same 3 boats were again top of the heap on handicap. In the afternoon, with the 6 race Nationals series finished, a grand 90 minute Pursuit was held. Mirror 67667 held the lead for half the race before British Moth 790 rocketed past, but was in 2nd place until almost the finish, when several boat blasted past in freshening wind. The Skua took a well deserved 2nd place.

Unusually for the cvrda, where grey beards are not an uncommon sight, there was a strong junior presence. 2 Mirrors, an OK, an International Moth and a Puffin were all sailed by under 18’s, with several junior crews, too. The youngest competitor was 9 years old, while the youngest pairing competing as helm and crew were 12 and 11, sailing Mirror 67667. They finished in the top 3rd of the fleet, too – a fantastic achievement in windy conditions.

The prize giving (with scones, jam and cream, of course) was a rowdy affair, with the most popular award being the “Wing Nut” for incompetence or ineptitude. This year’s competition was fierce, but the people’s choice was for the Skua, sailed by John and Jane Andrews, who capsized. Nothing unusual in that, except that the Skua has a large keel on the bottom of it, and was thought to be self righting! John is reported to have sat on the deck saying “She’ll come up in a minute, She’ll come up in a minute” as she was blown flat. She didn’t…

Results

Results for the cvrda are split into Vintage (boats built using traditional methods) Classic (boats designed and built before 1965) and Old (designed before 1965 and built before 1985. All boats race together.

The Wing-Nut award

The wing nut award is given for acts of gross ineptitude or underachievement, and is one of the most coveted prizes the cvrda gives out…

This year, there were enough acts of serious dumbness to warrant some of them being mentioned at the prize giving. As my notes of the goings on weren’t copious, I hope what I write here doesn’t differ too much from what I said then, or, less importantly, what really happened…

Garry Rucklidge, sailing with Tom Andrews, for ramming the immovable object… in this case the large keelboat known as the Skua. Presumably he was attempting to skewer it… Actually, what happened was that the bows of his beautiful 1950’s Rocket, Gannet, all ribs and copper rivets, went ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, and large quantities of whitefriars lake were able to make their way inside. Thank goodness for duck tape! The icing on this particular cake for the crowd at the prize giving was that the Skua is owned and sailed by the parents of Garry’s crew.

Charlie Whelan, for continuing a family tradition. He and Will hopes were really keen to get started at this Nationals, as keen as only 11 and 12 year olds can be. So keen, in fact, that Charlie, in his haste to sit out, threw himself overboard! The Mirror broached, capsized and turtled. However, they did manage to right her before the rescue boat got there, and while that race was over for them, they did continue to complete all the other races of the weekend.

Now, when I said family tradition, I was thinking of me at one of the original classics meets at Bristol Avon, where I ended up trying to steer with my head under water. However, the next mishap concerns Kathryn Whelan, so it really does seem to run in the family. Having owned Saskia for well over 15 years, you’d think Kathryn knew how to step into her… maybe not. Foot straight onto the thwart, boat rolls to windward, Kathryn falls in backwards, nice big splash as she enters the water…

Just to show that anything one Kathryn can do, another can do equally badly, Kate Penfold decided that sailing a Wayfarer is enough like sailing a yacht that you can simply step ashore, rather than doing all that scrabbling around the rest of us do. However, Kate discovered that it is well worth checking the shore is really there before taking that vital step… another nice big splash!

Moving on to a slightly more complex and long term series of under achievements, we come to the case of Tom Moore and his Minisail. This really starts on Tuesday, when Tom discovered a hole in the stern end of his self draining cockpit. A quick patch, all will be well. Having tied the boat down very well, he discovers on arrival that the one bit that wasn’t tied (“It goes in so tight it never moves”) has fallen out on the motorway. However, ingenious use of polystyrene and gash wood not only got him on the water but bagged him the false teeth award for using materials in ways never intended. But, the problems of Tuesday came back to haunt Tom when he put his knee straight through the rotten aft deck he had so carefully patched before. End of sailing for the weekend, one would have thought? No. Undaunted Tom borrowed another Minisail hull and carried on sailing. Unfortunately, in recovering from a capsize, he snapped the centreboard. At that point, it really was time to call it a day…

Another multi-boat under achiever is Andrew Parker Mobray. He decided to bring his 1976 Solo with him on the basis that he’d not sailed the 1971 boat at all, so it would be more reliable. Hmmm… Half way through Sunday, the rigging started to go rather slack, and water started pouring into the boat from under the mast foot. Time for a look to see what had gone wrong. Basically, the boat had rotted away under the mast step, and the mast was in the process of pushing its way through the bottom of the boat. Undeterred, he drove home, and came back next day with the 1971 boat. A short while later, he was back on the shore, and when asked why, said he had heard a bang, but couldn’t spot where it had come from, till he looked at the shrouds. One of them had broken all but 2 of the wires – 10 seconds more on that tack, and the mast would have come tumbling down. Cue very careful sail to the shore… and plenty of boat repairs to keep Andrew busy this winter!

Our final nomination is far more simple. As simple as a capsize. However, when the capsize is by John and Jane Andrews, in a boat with a large keel on the bottom, thought to be uncapsizable, the situation becomes a little more interesting. When you hear that John, as the boat is going over, is sitting on the deck of the Skua, not really trying too hard, saying “She’ll come up in a minute, she’ll come up in a minute” the case for under achievement becomes overwhelming, and the assembled masses decided that such a simply elegant cock-up deserved the 2011 Wing-nut award.
