The first start was delayed until 2pm because of light winds. Race Officer Ed Bremner got the fleet away led by the Javelin and Osprey. Lowrider Moth Alan Watson capsized near the second mark and complained that the wind was too light for him to get back in boat. That changed as the wind picked up to give some excellent planing reaches where the Moths were able to accelerate away. On the water the Javelin and Osprey had close racing at the front with the Finns and International Moths battling it out next and the rest of the fleet keeping pace behind.
